I think you could add pro scouting as one of Tre's weaknesses which led to the Neal, Hamonic and Brower signings. Maybe the goalie pickups, too.

To play devils advocate, pro scouts likely also had input on Lindholm, Hanifin, Tanev, Markstrom, Frolik, etc……it wasn’t all bad.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Its also possible that pro scouts said no to James Neal or Travis Hamonic but were overruled. It happens.

Yeah, from the way Conroy made it sound, Treliving didn't always include other staff in "the process".

Meh, Tanev I'll give you on this account. But Lindy and Hanifin were still very young nhlers and it was clear the team had been targeting lindholm since the draft where they missed him. Not sure that's a real pro scouting move and more continued interest since amateur scouting. Tanev is a good one because most fans thought he was washed and an injury magnet. That was a coup.
Frolik? Very meh. IMO he was a totally replaceable mid 6 player his entire tenure here, I was one of the crowd who didnt even want him to be re-signed. Also, the pro scouting credit for him should probably go to Winnipeg's staff, who plucked him as a way underperforming former first and turned him into a decent 2-way mid sixer in just a season by slotting him right.
Markstrom? Totally dependent on this coming season. But if he poos the sheets again, this is definitely a pro scouting loss.

I get it if you don't like Treliving you look for the negatives in players he signed.
But that's not really all that fair to Frolik. For a free agent signing he played a pretty important role on the 3M line for numerous seasons.
Not bad for a free asset.

The Flames needed a goalie. What UFA goalie was better?

every pro scout in the league would have had him as the best goalie available. He carried a bad team to the playoffs and through the play in and first round. 4th in Vezina voting.

Elliott got vezina votes as well. I was one of the fans that never liked Markstrom. Always liked when the flames would play him, seemed easy to beat with clean shots. Still is.

Mostly because there was not much else available, and he turned out to be **** anyway, so what does it matter?

How does a guy who is ‘easy to beat with clean shots’ have 4th and 2nd Vezina trophy votes under his belt?
Did I miss a Kevin Woodley analysis or something?

Even if Markstrom bounces back and has a good, or great, season I bet there will still be a good number of posters here who will still be saying ‘totally dependent on this upcoming season….’
Frolik was a solid addition. As is the case with most UFA signings the final year saw a drop off but that is not a problem unique to the Flames. It’s the case across the board with most teams and most players.

Dislike him all you want. That's not really the question. Flames had just cut Talbot loose because he played them right out of the POs.
Their choices to play goal on a team that still looked to have promise were: Khudobin, Holtby, Crawford, or Greiss.
Markstrom was younger than any other UFA goalie aside from third stringers, had a much better record than other starters and really, the only guy who actually played well after that was Talbot himself who put up OK numbers in Minnie and got shipped off to Ottawa where he stunk. Holtby went to Vancouver and we know what happened. Khudobin went to Dallas and got beaten for his job. Crawford signed a deal and then never played. Greiss went and floundered around for a while in Detroit.
Markstrom played very well off the hop, got hurt and came back too soon which hurt his season (though he turned a corner late). Then he was a Vezina final three candidate. Last year he had issues (not all his own either).

Looking at Treliving's largest total value signings excl last summer's. Over the years, I see more decent value signings than whiffs. But the whiffs sure hurt.

Now that he is back from vacation look for Francis to up his game in trying to drive Lindholm out of town. Yes, the local media does impact players wanting to be in a location.

Perhaps. I could easily see Francis not being popular amongst players on the roster but I also think Calgary is pretty mild in terms of media coverage. There are quite a few markets that have media members who are more difficult to deal with.

I see a whole lot of meh sprinkled with stinkers.
Would really like to see us hit some home runs with acquisitions. Hopefully Sharangovich is that.

Fair enough.
I do find it curious though that you’ve described the collection of recent UFA signings as meh to stinkers yet you’re optimistic that sharangovich will be a home run. I appreciate and share you optimistic outlook on shaggy but I think, realistically, he’s no more deserving of that optimism than Markstrom or a few others on that list were.
Another question I’ll ask; how many ‘home run’ UFA signings across the league are there over the last decade or so?
