First, we have no idea whether DeBrusk will commit to here, and second, I would rather win the trade than lose it.

Of course only do the deal with an extension. I’m more of a bird in hand is worth more than 2 in the bush person. No guarantee that we get a better player than Debrusk in any backlund deal. Some people more comfortable rolling dice on draft picks, but my memory does back to 2013 and how we busted on Klimchuk and Poirier. Set the franchise back considerably.

That would put us around $3.5M over the cap. I could see something like this:
To TOR: Hanifin, Sharagovich, Zary
To CGY: Nylander, Liljegren

Taking a while to get to 5000

They just traded for and signed Sharangovich. Guarantee he isn't being moved prior to the start of the season.
And no not even for Nylander who isn't being traded for a pending UFA, an RFA and a rookie.

First of all Nylander is also a pending UFA. I don't see how just acquiring Sharangovich and signing him before arbitration affect the situation. If a GM thinks he can make his team better he usually does.
As for Nylander's value, what is he getting traded for then? Because I packaged a #2D, a #2/3RW, and a former 1st round pick that's developing very nicely in the AHL.

I think they'd just find a taker for Backlund or Tanev rather than dumping Zary and Sharagovich

I'd look into Nylander if :
A) he would be willing to sign a long term deal at around 8.5 to 9 million
B) if Toronto was willing to accept Mangiapane, Tanev (retained at 50%) and a second for him.
If we acquired Nylander we couldn't keep Mangiapane at his current cap hit.
After that you run with the following :
Huberdeau-Lindholm-Nylander
Ruzicka-Kadri-Shaggy
Pelletier-Backlund-Dube
Coleman-Jones -Duehr

A) Possible but not likely
B) Impossible Imo

I don't see Toronto giving Nylander away for Hanifin(25% retained) + a pick. That's why I made it a more enticing package. Also, lost in all this Liljegren is a very good up and coming D.
Okay how many teams can take on Backlund/Tanev without sending salary back, that are also actually looking for rentals?
Nashville and Detroit maybe? that's about it.

It’s reported that Tatar has a PTO offer from the Leafs but is still hoping to get signed somewhere. Hard to see how they can fit him in though.

More grains of salt: Michael DeRosa of nhltraderumors names the Flames as 1 of 2 landing spots for Scott Laughton, the other being Minnesota. I'm a big fan of Scotty's, and he would look great in a flaming C!

We already have a Laughton in Dube, and he's 4 years younger. This team needs a high skilled top 6 center not a 3rd liner.

Can't see Backlund getting traded after the Huska interview. He loves Backs and he will be the captain. Too much history together.

I don't think there's too many similarities between Laughton and Dube, other than their shared ability to play all 3 forward positions- Laughton is bigger, much more hard-nosed and physical, and is known for his defensive prowess. Laughton is much closer to Backlund than Dube.
Yes, we could use another top-6 player, but does that mean we have to stop improving the bottom-6? Laughton has the skill and scoring to fill in as a second-line C, as well- or as a winger. We could use more hard-nosed, physical players.

What would a realistic acquisition cost be for Laughton?
