I shouldn't be laughing, but I am a 11 year old boy on the inside, I guess. The juxtaposition of that shape next to....well, you should be able to see it.

So the fire jumped the lake north of Kelowna?

Are the winds still blowing northward, or did they shift to the south/southeast (hence the additional west side evacuations)?

Hopefully it's still moving away from the densely populated areas, especially overnight when the helicopters won't be able to do their thing again. Hoping for the best.

I managed to not laugh at the juxtaposition, but I had to be on my breast behavior

I am hoping the fire doesn't make it to second base.

Legitimately looked up photos of the Nipple out of curiosity.

Last night the fire jumped the lake when the winds were blowing the fire towards the northeast.

This afternoon the winds shifted in the opposite direction. Right now the winds are starting to calm down a bit but largely coming from the North, pushing the fire towards Kelowna and West Kelowna.

It jumped last night.

The big issue I saw earlier today was reports that there could be dry lightning tonight, as well as the wind shifting. Could be a horrible night.

Ugh, not good.

Dry lightning? You know what we say to that:

Spoiler!

Wind in Kelowna forecast to blow towards the South through the weekend. Not super strong, but in a really bad direction. Westbank in particular and some of the homes to the north of Kelowna could be in trouble.

If the dump is still burning I would think anyone downwind should get out, fire risk or not. Who knows what's in that smoke.

Between Yellowknife and Kelowna - and whatever else may spark up - this could be a disastrous weekend.

Section of the TCH between Sorrento & Chase about to be shut down. Alternate routes listed as #97 & #97A - but how long will those be open?

If anyone is curious, the Daily - NYT's podcast - has a harrowing account today of a Lahaina survivor's escape. Really demonstrates how critical any advanced warning is when it comes to these fires. I think Yellowknife did the right thing evacuating early, and Kelowna should exercise similar caution.

I know a lot of people with rec properties in that area. One of our clients I spoke to a few hours ago is fearing the worst for their cabin.

My business partner had to go pick up his daughter from a camp on the trans-Canada highway side of Shuswap lake. When he drove by the Squilax Bridge, he said he could see flames down to the lake shore in the Scotch cCreek area.

i'd post another pic taken from my deck but our "view" right now is nothing but solid grey choking smoke - can't see the lake or west kelowna at all
one thing that has been interesting while listening to the scanner is the number of evacuated home owners who are calling the fire department to report flames right outside of their houses that they can see with doorbell cameras. it's actually really helping deploy crews where they are critically needed.
unfortunately there was one transmission earlier this afternoon where they had to retreat to safety becuz "they couldn't win that battle". many of the areas the fires are hitting are one way in/out access, which makes them very dangerous in fires like this. on roads like that, fire crews have been setting up sprinkler systems and then getting out before the fire arrives - hoping the sprinklers will do enough to save structures.

That fire on the highway by Chase didn't look good. I wonder if Talking Rock will make it out? They had that building fire a couple years ago too.

Just finished reading the following tweet then came here & saw your comment. This could just be so much yammer, but given some of the videos coming out & seeing a few people mention it, well....

If that's the case I would have to think the whole area is toast. That would be horrible for the little Shuswap lake band.

August 4th also has a episode ending Canada's unending fires. A very sobering listen.
