Based on Einstein's Theory of No Goodery, it's like trying to calculate Pi, it just goes on into infinity.

Jonathan Toews says he is stepping away from hockey -- but not for good.
The former Chicago Blackhawks captain -- and current unrestricted free agent -- announced in a social media post Thursday that while he's "not fully retiring" from the NHL, he will be "taking some time away from the game again this season."

I know many expected him to look at the greasepit as a landing spot....which IMO was always unlikely.

Does he have to sign somewhere by Dec 1 to play this season? Or is that clause only for specific reasons.

That's only for RFAs. I believe UFAs can sign any time up to the trade deadline and still be eligible to play in the playoffs. If he were to play any games in a European pro league, he would need to clear waivers before he could join an NHL team, but if he doesn't play anywhere else, there are no other conditions.
When Cujo signed with the Flames, he had played in the Spengler Cup to get into game shape, then was signed in mid-January.

Huh. Smyth seems like the last guy that would have treated other people poorly, but, if we're to assume that allegation is true that he jacked a rookie's goal?
That would say a lot about his character.
But at the same time, I'm going to need more than O'Brian's word for that.
I dont like Smyth, but I'm not going to vilify him on the word of O'Brian.

Smyth was a Bumonton (c)Oiler
Everything Bumonton is No Good
Ergo
Smyth = NG
O’Brien’s allegations notwithstanding!

I never minded Smyth, he played the right way.. didn't he take a massive cheap shot in a beer league game somewhere around Edmonton a few years after he retired? I thought he got really hurt.
