The problem with perjury is that Trump's lawyers would easily argue he personally believed it to be true. It doesn't matter if the Pope and Kanye called him up and told him it wasn't. Lawyers will have plenty of examples of Trump believing something even when all facts, evidence and experts point out it isn't.

That works so long as he hadn’t made any contradictory statements.

Saying "well he actually believes it" isn't magic, it's quite common to successfully argue against that in court.

I didn't know others were making that case. Trump is just a bit of an enigma, and I think a good lawyer could find that as a defence for him, given his past. Not that it matters, as perjury is the least of his worries.

"Did someone actually believe what they said" isn't a super uncommon thing to argue about in court just in general.
(I'm sure there's a lawyer somewhere on this site who could provide more information on the topic.)

I was just looking at this:
Quote:
he elements of perjury are (1) that the declarant took an oath to testify truthfully, (2) that he willfully made a false statement contrary to that oath (3) that the declarant believed the statement to be untrue, and (4) that the statement related to a material fact.
Proving Trump knew something was untrue is where I could see a lot of room for argument, as I outlined in my first post. That's all. Anyway least of his worries.
to be clear though while belief is a defence in perjury it isnt absolute, you cant argue you believed something after it was shown to you it was untrue, it isnt an insanity defence, you dont get to argue that you still believed it after it was proved to be obviously self serving bolloxs

Could a smart lawyer make the case that Trump has narcissistic personality disorder and is incapable of believing things that contradict his own narrative?

I think he'd just talk around that, since in the same speech "Trump also said 'the election was rigged and lost'". I don't see that as a real admission.

Trump doesn't get to "talk about it" unless he takes the stand, which then exposes him to cross examination. This is something his lawyers will want to avoid at all costs. It's exactly how Trump continues to lose case after case. Soooooo much losing.
I honestly can't tell if Trump is actively lying, or if he honestly delusional. I would love for a medical professional to assess him and figure it out. If he is delusional, no amount of evidence is going to convince him he is wrong. It will just convince him more that the conspiracy against him is even bigger and more complicated.
Legally, I am not sure if it matters either way, I am just honestly intrigued with him as a specimen on an academic level.

Trump is self aware. He's a bumbling idiot on a lot of levels, but he knows what he is doing in creating his image. The election lies are not that different than his personal wealth lies. He's all about the facade literally and figuratively.
He puts way more effort into appearing rich than actually building wealth. He is on record as only caring about how he only cares about how a restaurant or hotel looks like on the outside. He is very aware that he doesn't own building just because they have his name on the top, but that doesn't stop him from counting them as his assets.
He created his political persona by creating an image he could sell to rural America, and going with the election was stolen was an easy sell to his bubble. He knows no one likes a loser, so going with the election was stolen is the only way to stay relevant.

is fully aware he's full of ####e, the smile when he's caught on the ties tells you all you need to know

If you read art of the deal, it's spelled out quite clearly that everything he does is part of a deceitful strategy.
As someone that's disliked his fake rich amazing business man BS since 2006 I'm still on the best timeline, because he never would have been exposed as a fraud without this much scrutiny.
You've got to widen your perspective past 2015 when he announced, past 2012 when he fake announced... he's always been a con man.
