Yellowknife Residents told to Evacuate due to WildFires
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north...t-16-1.6938756
Quote:
In a news conference Wednesday evening, Minister Shane Thompson announced a city-wide evacuation order due to an approaching wildfire. The evacuation would involve a "phased approach," with people from areas of the city already under alert (Kam Lake, Grace Lake, Engle industrial area) heading out Wednesday night, alongside people in Dettah and those along the Ingraham Trail. Fire information officer Mike Westwick said fire could reach the Ingraham trail by Friday.

"The fire now represents a real threat to the city," Thompson said, adding it could reach the outskirts of the city by the weekend. The fire was about 17 kilometres from the city on Wednesday, he said.

On a personal note. My In-Laws left this afternoon and are currently on the Highway. They are hoping to make High Level for tonight. No Hotels unfortunately. They are coming to stay with us.

Really scary situation, with only one road out of town. Hopefully the evacuation is precautionary and it doesn't actually reach the city. Anyone know a good resource for people who want to help? Whether it be supplies or a spare room?

Knut, do they have a camper or anything? If they've got something, a lot of people are parking at the arena, the parking lots at the schools, etc. My in-laws are in High Level - they got evac'd from there in 2019, due to the wildfire there, and came to stay with us for a while, much like your in-laws will be doing.
I wonder if any of the churches would put them up for the night? I might be able to do some phoning, see what or if I would be able to scare up a bed for them somewhere...

Maybe not the best post in the thread where someone said their parents are being evacuated.

Well In-Laws. But I like them.
I didn’t take offence. Lots of suck right now out there.

I'm listening to CBC Yellowknife radio this morning, they moved their operations over to Whitehorse. Tune in here for information: https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio...e-trailbreaker
They were mentioning that there will also be evacuation flights out of the airport today too.
Sucks that we really are going to need an Ongoing Wildfires Thread annually at this rate.

Yeah, it really hit me hard yesterday for some reason, realizing that in our future, there may only be two seasons in Canada... winter and smoke.

Mayor said they're making a line of 100m where they'll cut down anything that can burn along the west side to create a buffer between the fire and city if needed.
People also fireproofing their residences in recent days as best they can ...not sure what that means though and how effective that can be.
These aren't Maui type winds either. But its gaining about 4-5 km of distance per day apparently.

Fireproofing your place would be removing all combustibles from around your home, cutting down shrubs and anything that could fuel it. The idea being you create an island around your home that the fire can't reach as it goes by.

My inlaws got chased out of their place in Osoyoos a couple weeks back with like an hour notice. They were lucky that they have a motorhome that they can get in and drive away. Plus they didn't need to leave town. Still that was enough of a scare. Being evacuated to a place 8 hours away is pretty difficult. Hopefully they can stop this one and get everyone back home.

They deemed it was inhumane to make them go from wildfire smell to Edmonton smell.
