You think Glencross is a country club kind of guy?

You think I’m talking about a literal country club? How many actual real life country clubs exist solely within hockey locker rooms?

Nobody thinks “country club” in reference to a locker room is referring to a literal country club. Don’t be stupid. But saying he was a “card carrying member” certainly suggests he contributed to that atmosphere.
So, again, do you genuinely think that’s who he is? Happy to mail it in? Just there to have fun and collect a paycheque?
Does that scream “Curtis Glencross” to you?

No but that really doesn’t have anything to do with it.
I don’t think that Iggy was happy to have fun and collect a paycheque. Nor did he mail it in.
It has to do with the culture that Hartley was brought in to dismantle. Entitled veterans were casualties.
Hartley drove him away from Calgary then he played 18 games and was out of the league. Just let that marinate a bit.
Like I said, maybe Hartley told him some truths he didn’t like to hear. Hartley didn’t come in to befriend the old guard.
Just because he is a good guy who gave an honest effort doesn’t mean he wasn’t too comfortable or that he can’t think a bit more highly of himself than maybe was appropriate

A couple of things that both Stajan and Glencross eluded to with Hartley were:
1. Hartley not being honest with players.
2. Hartley being a completely different person in the media and in the room.
3. He was playing favorites. Essentially letting the top 6 off the hook, while making the bottom 6 hate him.
4. Hartley not creating roles for players in the bottom of the lineup.
Glencross did mention why he was out of the league. He went on 2 PTO's that summer, and neither Toronto, nor Colorado offered him a contract. Toronto wanted to go with their younger players, while Colorado had Roy, and didn't give him a reason. His agent wanted him to join a team after the start of the season, but he didn't want to leave/uproot his family on a moment's notice. I think it was the bad stretch with WSH that ruined his career.

Rhett and Stajan agreed that Hartley did give roles.
I don’t think the favourites thing was quite that simple. He used Josh Jooris to prove a point
Anyways, not worth getting in to it in detail

People here were talking about this long ago when he was still coaching, but there is selective listening here and others who think that absolutely no one can know anything that goes on behind the scenes...and then people who may have those tidbits stop bothering about posting those things publicly.
He was miserable as a coach on the bench and in the room and didn't care. He had the rumors of him getting courted by Montreal over blown by Lavoie so that the GM here at the time (and godfather to his child) could look like he had a win to his bosses by bringing in a coach that no one had wanted for years and hasn't wanted since (much like the GM at the time).
Him winning the Jack Adams set the team back a year because Treliving couldn't fire him.

I still think Bob Hartley must be a former goaltender
Only thing that makes sense to me.

Didn't Tanguay reach out to Hartley to seek advice to get his career back on track?

I find it strange that Feaster is/was such a fanboy of Hartley (including godfather to kids). Just seems like a mismatch in personalities.

They won a championship together in Hershey of the AHL when Hartley was head coach and Feaster was team president. That success together probably led both guys to future NHL gigs.

They both were kind of phony with media. Don't know if Feaster was an ahole behind the scenes.

This sounds like speculation. What is the actual support for him being a "card carrying member of the country club"? His NHL career coming to an end is evidence of nothing.

I don't think I would waste too much time trying to defend him, but I would love to listen to the other half of those teams and hear about what he did right as well, because there most certainly were a lot of good things that he did.
At any rate, I will forever look fondly at that team. It wildly exceeded expectations, and it gave us some massive entertainment value at the time. Whether you hate Hartley or you love him, it is undeniable that the team then were so incredibly fun to watch and kept us all on the edges of our seats, and I don't think that I have ever yelled louder for Flames' goals since the '04 run and haven't since that magical season came to an end.

You typically only get the negative view on the internet.
I agree with you on that team being super fun to watch. It was almost effortless winning. Surreal in a way.
Until the playoffs of course. Where they got pounded.

It's crazy how Hartley is remembered for one season and not the two others when the Flames were terrible to watch.
While it's true that Glencross didn't like his ice time, IMO the fact that it was vets who made their views known is a function of them being vets, not the fact they were butt hurt. Vets can speak their mind. The Baertschis on the team couldn't.
