Petry to Detroit
https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/2692784
The Detroit Red Wings are acquiring Petry - an Ann Arbor, Michigan, native - from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for fellow defenseman Gustav Lindstrom and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2025, the teams announced Tuesday.
The Habs will retain 50% of Petry's remaining salary, bringing his cap hit down to $2.34 million

Does this take Detroit off the rumoured interest list for Hanifin?

Can’t imagine Detroit is that interested in Hanifin when you can acquire a middle pairing D at a fraction of the cost. Decent ASP stopgap.

Yeah, this is a bad sign for the Hanifin market in two ways. Price is low, especially with 50% retention. And it removes a potential suitor.

Everything Yzerman has done this offseason has been baffling to me.

I assume that the Wings kicked the tires on Hanifin and didn’t like thevAcqustion cost or the contract cost, or Perhaps Hanifin didn’t want to extend with them.

Could also be the Wings wanted Petry and the Habs were pushing for better assets so the rumor over the past couple days the Wings were in on Hanifin forced the Habs to close that deal today instead of getting a higher pick.

Feels more like Hanifin cost didn't come down like Yzerman had hoped it might, so he moved on to plan B which was Petry.
When Healthy Petry is still a pretty serviceable dman, and $2.34M is cheap.

The Hanifin and Petry markets are pretty different. Petry is a stop gap. Hanifin is a player you acquire as part of a long-term plan. Some teams will be interested in both.

And he’s not as good… and presumably Hanafin comes with an extension negotiated with the team he’s going to.
Forget an orange, comparing Hanafin to Petry is like comparing an apple to a turnip.

I looked back to see if he was at least traded for something of substance when he was 25… but since it was Edmonton they just got a 2nd for him. ENG.

You trade for Petry hoping he can play for two more years.
You trade for Hanifin expecting him to be a key part of your team for the next 8-9 years.
Totally different players.

Absolutely, but I doubt they trade for Petry if Hanifin is on the cards.
Hanifin is a stop gap until the Wings younger d develop.

Hanifin is obviously a better player than Petry. But this move likely takes DET out of the running for the former. Here’s their depth chart:
Walman (3.4) - Seider (0.86)
Chiarot (4.75) - Petry (2.43)
Gostisbehere (4.1) - Holl (3.4)
Maata (3.0)
Where would Hanifin fit?

You like to give him the benefit of the doubt but then he passed on Wallstedt for Cossa which was questionable and his free agent acquisitions look equally questionable.
JT Compher — $5.1m x 5 years
Justin Holl — $3.4m x 3 years
Gostisbhere — $4.1m x 1 year
Ben Chiarot — $4.8m x 4 years
David Perron — $4.8m x 2 years
Andrew Copp — $5.6m x 5 years
Ville Husso — $4.8 x 3 years
That's a lot of money tied up into mediocre players.
