People that are employed in "essential services" are really hamstrung. They lose all negotiating powers.
One more possibility is some of the bus drivers quitting and moving on to other jobs.

Results by 10 o'clock. They expect 90% to vote in favour of strike so this isn't exactly "edge of your seat" action.

Or all of them... it's not like there is a shortage of good jobs available.

Then you'll be in great shape. I have a co-worker that rides 50km round trip every day year round. It's not impossible.

I'm supposing that I need to get my bike tuned up now... perhaps some air in my tires and whatnot. I should anyways, but dammit! I enjoyed being lazy!

###. I spent 18 years working in a union enviroment and know full well the bullying and intimidation that goes on to get members to vote for a strike. The union may say they have alot of support, but you can be sure there's alot of members who won't be happy with going on strike. And if those members try to speak out against the strike they will be drowned out by catcalls and threats. The funny part about all this is that the union never tells it's members that wages lost during a strike are never recouped.

Boy, he should get a medal right away... I hope that was toungue in cheek, because that's pretty ridiculous to even suggest.

How old is this guy?

Think of all that great exercise and fresh air you'll be getting.

Or my favorite that our union pulled on us... "since we've depleted our emergency funds, we're now upping your union dues by 500%"

Gee, thanks guys.

I have a friend who lives in Queensland and rides his bike to work downtown everyday.

He's 38 or 39. Why is it a ridiculous suggestion? Calgary has one of the best pathway systems on the planet.

I could also suggest living closer to where you work/go to school.

That guy will probably die at 55 due to heart complications.. Over exertion is not a good way to excercize.

100km a day? That IS stupid.

I can't disagree about your 2nd comment though... I'd ride to work if I worked downtown and lived close enough, but 50km twice a day? That's freakish and unrealistic

Well he said round trip... so it's only 50 kms.

50 km round trip.

And if the guy does it every day, he's making his heart stronger, not weaker.

The alternative though would be to sit in a car for 90 minutes a day. Would that be better for him?

25km one way. Only 50km/day, not 100. I ride with a few guys who can do 100km in their sleep, it definitely depends on what kind of shape you're in.

I'm not in amazing shape but I do a 39km round trip most days to and from work. You just need to start off a little slowly and work your way up, then it's no problem at all.

Exactly! Daily exercise is one of the best things for your heart and body.

True... consistent excercize is the best way to do it. What do I know? I'm no doctor.

Even 50 KM's seems like alot though. I wouldn't be crazy enough doing that... that's just me.

I just wouldn't be suprised if 10km's as opposed to 50 would be better for you in the long run. Anyway, this doesn't have really anything to do with the topic at hand so i'll concede.

Don't forget the one where members are supposed to walk the line collecting ridiculously low strike pay while the union big wigs are still collecting their full salary. It's no wonder they push so hard for strikes

A lot of them probably have a lot tied up in pensions and what not. Just jumping ship on a job that youve had for a long time isnt easy.

It might be easier for young guys who just started, but not realistic for the long serving type.
