Not great at reading comprehension, but I liked it this way than the other way.
Most people over 25 getting a balloon is because they have friends and families that enjoy humiliating them. Like the friends and families that love the restaurant singing and embarrassing them in front of the whole restaurant.
Birthday person hates it. Restaurant hates it. The only person enjoying this is the person smiling like an arsonist at a fire. ~Brad Upton, paraphrased.
NGL, you described this like a photo in the Harry Potter universe. I thought it sounded kinda cool.

Had a big number birthday recently. Told the wife, we can have friends over that weekend (it wasn't the exact day) but no party. F'ers had a sash they made me wear, a cake with a singing candle that wouldn't shut up, and a lot of "you're old" gifts.

That's the upside of living far from family and having no friends. Never have to worry about this kind of stuff.

It's like when I had a birthday party with a friend and the server said, "I don't know if your friends love you or hate you, but here are another 3 shots just for you."
I don't know some of that guy's friends, but he was completely done by the end of the night after something like 22-26 shots in 2-3 hours. That's with but not factoring his wife secretly taking some of his shots and me/her ordering a tray of multiple shot glasses of water/flat ginger ale to kinda get the others to back off. Dude had no idea, he was so gone. His wife chewed him out the next day saying he must have bragged about his tolerance because everyone was trying to take him down except for me and his wife. I'm not even going to go into the concept of sending shots to someone and not partaking yourself, because I grew up being told that's a party foul...
But you also bring up something I had sorta noticed for a while but not completely identified. Are people actually celebrating birthdays? Or is it just a free for all for covertly mocking the person celebrating a birthday?

After a certain age (about 20) birthday celebrations are just ridiculous.

More like after 10. I've never had a birthday after 10 that involved anyone outside of immediate family.
My husband and I for 10+ years now, just go for dim sum on our birthdays. It's the only two times in the year we go for dim sum, to keep it somewhat special.

A lot of you people seem to really hate life. And I’m with you. Mass ritual suicide anyone? But no party celebrating it! That’d be ####ing lame. So lame I’d die

Eh, I like having a 'birthday' party. I invite a dozen or so folks over, fire up the BBQ, and have a get-together. It's always a good reason to see some friends. It's not like I expect gifts or anything. Just using a reason to get together with friends.

You can have them yearly until you hit 18.
Then is should be at 30/40/50/60, etc.

I don't usually do anything for mine, but I enjoy going to friends get togethers for theirs. It's just a good excuse to hangout with friends, and it's not like you're playing party games and all that.

Funny timing for this discussion because tomorrow is my 50th and it'll be the first time I've ever taken my birthday off. Really, I just wanted a nice quiet weekday matinee to see Oppenheimer, so it being my birthday is as good an excuse as any.

It sounds like some people really accept becoming dull in their old age. What happened to the epic midlife crisis?
