A friend on Facebook shared a Meme of "Liberals when they hear Try That in a Small Town"" with a guy crying.

I almost responded. Yeah, did you actually listen to the song? I scream and cry to turn it off too. Lyrics aside, it's just awful.

Cards on the table, even if you don't like the lyrics of a song, you can appreciate the beat, rhyme structure, etc but "Try That in a Small Town" is just bad, even for stadium country, the only reason it charted, let alone at #1 was because of the controversy.

Same song but different lyrics about dusty boots, girls in short shorts, cool nights, cold beer, and pickup trucks and no radio station plays it.

Most musicians are cultural impersonators.

Bob Dylan and Neil Young weren’t simple salt-of-the-earth folks - both were raised in comfortable, middle-class suburbs.

Bruce Springsteen was raised in a working-class household, but New Jersey is a far cry from the dying Pennsylvania mining towns and hardscrabble rural Nebraska that he sings about. And the champion of the working man never did a day of manual labour in his life.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards both came from comfortably middle-class homes (Jagger was studying to be an accountant when the Stones took off). They’re among the legions of middle-class white boys who took on the language, mannerisms, and posturing of Black blues musicians.

Joe Strummer, that icon of angry young men with no future, is the son of a diplomatic and spent his childhood in posh boarding schools.

And successful musicians of all genres continue to perform songs about common people with common problems for decades after they’ve led lives of extraordinary wealth and privilege.

Pop music is performance art. It’s all an act, regardless of genre.

Many US 60s hippy musicians came from high-ranking US military intelligence families in Laurel Canyon, including The Byrds, Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison, the Buffalo Springfield, the mammas & the pappas, the eagles, the monkeys, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell.

https://groovyhistory.com/laurel-can...-star-1970s/11

The conspiracy goes that this was a deliberate, and very successful, effort by military intelligence to derail the clean-cut, shirt-and-tie anti-war movement into a bunch of narcissistic, drug-addicted, sex-obsessed morons.

Not sure if you mneant it but not many of those people had military intel backgrounds in their families.

Joni Mitchell's dad was a low ranking RCAF in Ft. Mac. in WWII. He was done by the time she grew up and worked as a grocer in small town Saskatchewan.

Crosby was well off but had no military intel background in his family. Still's dad was in the military, but in Louisiana/Fla area. Nash was British.

Zappa's dad was a chemist, albeit for a military contractor. And he rebelled against that.

Morrison's dad became an admiral. But then again, I never thought of the Doors as particularly hippyish.

Not sure who in the Byrds you are referring to.

Yeah, a lot of families had military service in their background. It's almost like there was something big needing a lot of soldiers going on around 1940-1950 or so...

Theres a conspiracy theory in here somewhere....I know there is....but I really have no idea what it is.

Does it have anything to do with folding chairs?

Can always count on Matata to deliver an insanely tangential conspiracy theory right when conversation is ebbing.

The United States Military Industrial Complex ain't lettin' a 'Vietnam' happen all over again.

I mean...the 'protesting' bit, not the 'Invading whoever they want' bit. They're going to keep on doing that.

What was the goal? To make leftist anti-war politics more popular with young people? The sex and drugs made it better.
