When people complain they didn't like a video game because the story was bad. Every video game story is bad, to some degree, it's not really why you're there. Read a book if you want a good story.

Hard disagree; there are many story-driven video games. And many great stories therein.

I’ve received a 26 page long resume that included qualifications like certified metaphysical facilitator (level 4), theories on artificial intelligence, physics formulas (keep in mind this was for a writing position), a multi-page essay on redefining and transcending productivity, the outlines of software development workshops, references to schools that do not exist, cryptic cartoons, and scanned excerpts of academic studies with no context. All presented with different layout, fonts, etc on every page.

Got the same resume when the position was posted again 18 months later. So it wasn’t a one-off joke.

We couldn’t decide if it was a clever way to meet EI requirements of applying for jobs without any risk of actually landing one, or the personal manifesto of a deranged mind. Either way, my co-worker and I wanted to meet the applicant, and we pleaded with our manager to let us bring her in for an interview. But she said it would be unethical since we had no intention of hiring her.

This is just an awful take. I mean if all you want out of a video game is a distraction, like some sort of fancy fidget spinner to pass your time, then that's fine - enjoy your games however you enjoy them. But don't try to tell other people that their priorities are wrong or what they enjoy about games is wrong.

I mean Disco Elysium by itself completely obliterates your whole premise here.

Aren't video games becoming a problem for many parents?

Hey man, if they're wrong, they're wrong.

There's been lots of amazing games released with bad or no story, in fact that's most games. But there's never been an amazing game released with bad or no gameplay.

I have no idea, not being a parent, nor do I know in what way you're saying they're becoming a problem... but it seems to me there's no reason they should be more of a problem than they have been for the past 30 years. Video games are not a new invention or anything.

Again, you're simply wrong... What Remains of Edith Finch has basically no gameplay. Even going back to Disco Elysium, there are some cool RPG systems in that game but I am not sure if they count as "gameplay", really.

Do the Telltale games or things like Life is Strange really have much on the gameplay front to defend? I haven't really played much in that genre. But there are plenty of people who would say those games are amazing.

It's hilarious that your position on the merit of a particular form of entertainment is to gatekeep by DOWNPLAYING the value of any actual artistic merit that anyone might consider important... It's like you're being a snob but in entirely the wrong direction.

What exactly do you mean by that, and what does that have to do with the post you quoted?

The storyline is an inherent feature of basically every single player-focused game ever released, yet you think it's wrong to consider it so? It's very subjective but personally story is a huge part of a single player experience for me, sports and racing games excluded obviously.

Isn't that like complaining they didn't like a porn movie because the story was bad? When porn movies still existed?

I hope you're being facetious, but if not, then no - nothing like that at all.

Think harder about why this might be.

Also, when you say "Every video game story is bad, to some degree, it's not really why you're there", sure, except when you are because games can be -- and often are -- story-driven. Does Forza Horizon 5 need a coherent story to be fun? No, you're air-dropped into Mexico and you're part of the Horizon Festival and your goal is to beat all the events. Easy peasy.

But how someone could say that Metal Gear Solid, or The Last of Us (or any RPG that people give a crap about) would be anywhere near as good as they are without the story and character development... I think that person is missing what makes modern games so good.

But, to be clear, my gear grinder was for people specifically not liking a game that is otherwise excellent because they didn't like the story.

If the only thing you care about is a game's story, so much so that it overrides everything else, gaming is a hollow pursuit. You'll be disappointed 99% of the time. Even in your replies to me you've used the same game twice because there just aren't many games that have great stories, and Disco Elysium's is largely good because of the amount of player agency and freedom given (that's the game-y element).

If you're in pursuit of great, thought-provoking stories and it's the number one thing you enjoy or care about, why play a video game?

You know, I'm a big car guy... yet I've just never been into these games. It's the same with sports games - I'm obviously a big hockey fan, and to varying extents, fans of other sports. But I just cannot care very much about these types of games, no matter how good the gameplay and atmosphere are. I'll go through a couple of races and within a few hours it just becomes really obvious to me that all this is is a waste of time. I.e., I won a few races against computer-generated opponents and upgraded my car so I can do it again against slightly better computer-generated opponents on a better track... so? It doesn't feel like an accomplishment to me.

Playing multiplayer is better because it's a competition against actual people but multiplayer spaces are often so toxic that it completely offsets any enjoyment, and again, it's at best a distraction to pass a bit of time, which is fine but doesn't feel all that rewarding to me.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I have never gotten beyond 50% at best in any FH game. I know a ton of people are into it, just not me. And yeah, this is as a huge car guy myself.

So basically "Why don't people enjoy and appreciate things the way I enjoy and appreciate them?"

That's why this is a bad gear grinder.

The secret to Slurpees for me is you have to cut them down with water. I take it home and pour into 2 cups, about 1/4 water in each cup and refreeze. Perfect.

What kind of writing? I think there is something to be said for it being just crazy enough you had to mention it on a message board. It's arguably a shame the door is totally closed on the interview. Crazy people in the right job for said crazy can be game changers. I'm not saying the resume as described isn't one of the more loony things I've heard, but maybe the person is actually quite different from what you might expect based on it. Worst case Ontario is they're simply not the right candidate. I think I'd be a terrible business owner...
