Horvat set Lindholm’s contract value. If Lindholm signs for 8.5 he is technically taking a discount. Whether the Flames should sign him to that contract is a different discussion

You are probably right. Two teams trying to hang on. Islandere of course having much more playoff success but willing to fork out cash for another shot at glory (or for the Flames a shot at the third round or beyond). Window is likely closing fast for both organizations to achieve that success again (or to achieve it for the first time).

This makes me want to go get more swedes with newborns. Actually serious. They get the value of Calgary for a new family.

The Flames don't have to be idiots just because the Islanders were idiots.

For the record, I even think Lindholm is a better player than Horvat.

Oilers had 3 guys get 100 points and 1 other player over a ppg last year. They must be the best team in the league?

Lindholm points were pretty impressive considering Toffoli had a career high in points last year but typically is a 50 point guy and the other linemate seemed to be a revolving door of 3rd line players.

That is a different discussion though. Lindholm at 8.5 is at worst a fair market value contract. I don't think they should do it but I am also not expecting a rebuild even if Lindholm says he wants out.

No it isn’t. You are equating “fair market value” with one teams (arguably bad) contract.

Here is a list of all centers.

https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/a...ts-season=2023

Hayes, Horvat, Zibanejad, Couture, Aho, and Miller are all in the same ballpark as that contract. It isn't amazing but it isn't some criminal overpayment.

The Flames will really be painting themselves into a corner signing Lindholm for 8 years. That's a ton of money and term tied up in aging players, none of which are elite. Long road ahead going down that path.

If that happens, we’re going to need quite a few things to go right. Cap exploding, Wolf becoming a starting goalie on a sweetheart contract, and our entry level contracts to kick ass, but not enough ass to price them out here.

I think it is a bit too soon before we say Huberdeau is not elite anymore. His bounce back along with Markstrom’s (of Wolf proving he is legit) are the keys to this team actually being something other than a team likely on the outside of the bubble

Seems like a good argument to sign him, Toffoli is gone and we still have the third liners to play with him.

Even a 90pts Huberdeau is still elite light to me. Strong supporting piece as a 2nd or 3rd option but not the number 1 guy leading your team. Especially with this supporting cast. I just don't see a 1-2 punch of Huberdeau and Lindholm as the main drivers for a Cup winning offense.

Every single dollar and year of term in the entire NHL, on every team, is tied up in aging players.

Only 19 players in the entire league had 90+ points last year…
Tell me that your expectations aren’t out of whack.

NHL ALL TIME ASSISTS RECORD year before last

CP meh, not elite

I mean if he has another poor season sure but that is ridiculous. I also don't think anyone would have put up crazy numbers on the Flames last year. Especially with how they were deployed.

EK probably would have had 30 points with Sutter playing him on the PK and 15 mins a night

NHL All time assists record.

By a left winger.

46th all time.

Regardless he had an elite season that year, no denying it. The guy has some skill.
