White cars are awesome in winter climates because they look the cleanest through the road salt months. You do need to tint the windows, though, to add some contrast IMO.

Black cars are such a PITA to keep clean.

I do agree that we see way too many white/silver/black vehicles nowadays.

If I was going to buy a brand new car tomorrow, I'd really have a hard time pulling the trigger on a colour other than white, though. I do like that creamy grey thing, but it's a bit overdone so I probably wouldn't do it. Or maybe I would. IDK...I think it can look pretty sweet. Wouldn't go black, though. I'd probably be a bit pissed at myself in the winter if I didn't have a light-coloured car because it would be annoying having it always look dirty.

Audi has a nice blue I like a lot ("turbo blue"). Genesis has a matte white that looks totally sick on the G70...plus you can get it with a red leather interior. Very cool combo, although this is the last year for the G70, so I guess I'll never have it.

Fair. I guess the difference is I had already made the decision "go to university"; it didn't even occur to me to take a year off. I ended up applying to engineering by a process of elimination, and with the encouragement of others who told me "You're so good at math, you should go into engineering!"; it was not because I 'wanted' to, per se. I felt like I blundered into it, and through it. I guess I benefitted from having very good grades, having taken all the academic electives I could in high school (full French immersion, Math 31, biology, chemistry, physics...) and thus was able to qualify for guaranteed admission in pretty much anything. (/decades-old high school humblebrag)

Still describes my university experience pretty accurately.

Agreed about the grooming part, but there are those who do the MBA of their own volition for seemingly confusing reasons. The ones that are more odd are individuals who are designated and have an MBA as well. I had some friends who were offered by their employer either MBA or a designation, never both. But I've met a few CPA + MBA and CFA + MBA and I'm kinda confused why they'd do that. Typically you'd accomplish a very similar education in CPA and CFA to MBA, no?

I assumed at first it was maybe MBA first then designation so that they could sign off on certain things and be accredited to do certain things. But when I asked, it was... nope. Other way around. MBA obtained after designation. WTF why?
I honestly don't know what it takes to get a CFA or CPA, but I would think you'd get the professional credential before the masters degree.

I'm on my second white car in a row. When I got this one, I explicitly said to the salesman, "I don't want a white car". Of course, that was the best deal and made the most sense. So, next car will not be white. I like the idea of a blue, and black cars just look so awesome. Yeah, you have to wash it more often, but then you have a nice clean car.

The CFA is cheap, but an enormous amount of work, whereas the MBA is expensive, but everyone seems to love the actual course. There's absolutely no guarantee you're passing the CFA exams, whereas you pretty much are getting the MBA as far as I understand.

A CPA or CFA takes approximately 2-3 years to complete depending how aggressive you are. You also typically do it while simultaneously working. MBA on the other hand, the vast majority of people I know who took it aren't working while doing it. It's MBA full time, typically for 2 years. Yes, there's accelerated/evening MBA that are 12 months and I have a few friends who did it while working, but it's not typically done this way.

But that's besides the point. The analytics/tools, case studies, evaluations, group projects etc. skills and knowledge you'd obtain when completing a CPA or CFA are very similar to an MBA with perhaps the CPA or CFA going even higher than the MBA. It's highly redundant to obtain both which is why it seemed ridiculous to me.

P Eng. + MBA makes a ton of sense for instance. CPA/CFA MBA is dumb IMO.

Maybe 20-30yrs ago you could "blunder through an engineering degree" (well, you still needed SOME smarts), but certainly not now IMO. Not with the entrance requirements being over 90% average plus solid Math/Science requirements. Back in the late 80's I remember your grade 12 high school average could be about 20% lower and still get in. Of course over 1/3 dropped out first semester, and probably another 1/4-1/3 within a year after that.

That said... these days... I recommend 2yr tech degree at SAIT for vast majority of kids. Get some earnings, decide if you like it, then work whilst upgrading.

Also... for those bluecollar folks working away from home - much of the time they're earning way more than the Calgary engineer/CFA. Anecdotally (see earlier notes on this thread) many are making over $250k/yr. I've seen far too many driving their $100k F250's/F350's and blowing most of it on toys, smokes, and campers, etc, and hardly saving a dime.

I used to assume people bought white cars because they were cheaper, or because they were no other options available. When I learned some people actually prefer white cars I was astonished. Is the draw the ugliness, or the difficulty in keeping them looking clean in this climate?

I just reviewed a batch of resumes. There was enough of them that were so utterly terrible that I was legitimately offended.

Guaranteed admission was something like 85% when I was a student. 86%? Somewhere in that neighbourhood. Anyway, not important.

I don't think the bigger obstacle is it's harder to get in nowadays, I think the bigger obstacle is the cost.

30 years ago a B.Sc. in engineering cost about $9k in tuition. 20 years ago it cost about $22k. Now it's about $40k. Plus everything else—room and board, etc.—costs a ####load more.

Anecdotally I remember it being about half either dropped out or flunked out by the beginning of second year, and... yeah, another 1/3ish by the beginning of third year. They were probably the smart ones.

The Calgary people get to spend their lives in Calgary. The folks working away from home get to live...there.

I went through the same thing once, then I realized they were just multiple copies of my resume printed in different fonts and I went from offended to just disappointed in myself.
