Like most teams depends on the goalie who shows up.

Flames looked like they would cruise to the Western conference finals but a Markstrom meltdown left the team in shambles.

True, if Bob for some reason goes back to being bad Bob and Knight doesn't come back the same it could go downhill fast. Hard for me to see it though, you have remember they had big changes last year with the locker room shakeup (same as the Flames) and also a new coach, who changed all their systems. A ton of injuries on top of that. A lot went wrong for them last year. I'd be surprised to see them only as a bubble team but stranger things have happened.

They gave up by far the best player. They cleared cap in 3 years.......but for the next two Rutta, Granlund and the retained on Karlsson will cost them $9.25 million against the cap. Not exactly clearing major space.

Montreal somehow got the second best player in the deal in Petry and a 2nd round pick. I bet the Canadiens will fetch more in trade for him than what the Sharks get for the 3 bozos they acquired.

So the Sharks basically ended up with a late first. What's the point? It's not like they will be good again in that time frame. They don't have one good under 25 year old player on their roster.

You would think they would have gotten a couple of more futures at least.

Montreal arguably got a better return for just hanging around.

Not even sure why Montreal had to be a part of this deal to be honest. San Jose should have just taken Granlund, Rutta, Petry, the 1st, the 2nd, and called it a day.
We don't know if it's a "late first" could easily be a mid or high.

The guy has been available to the entire league for months...telling that this was the best offer

He had a no trade clause and would only go to a select few teams.

I think the Sharks just wanted the contract to go away but they still got hosed.

The pick is top 10 protected, so they can't possibly pick higher than 11th with this pick.

Regardless of exactly how Karlsson plays, fact of the matter is it was an excellent deal for the Pens. In one move Dubas essentially undid the entire Hextall era (except Carter).

Even if he's a 60 point player next year, this is an improvement on the roster this team had 48 hours ago. Given the assets he had to work with, Dubas did about as well as you could reasonably hope for.

Do they just get the 1st rounder the year after if it is a top 10 pick?

God you guys are obsessed with me. If Bob stands on his head the entire season next year they will be a great team. Otherwise, bubble team again.

It could be higher...if the Pens are bottom 10 this season there is a good chance they will be bottom 10 the next.

I think the player is over rated big time. If you guys dont that's fine, let's see how much the Pens have improved. We will find out on the ice.

OMG man, you're absurd, it's hilarious. Sage is a great, level poster, you're just so over the top in your homer takes that you pump every current Flames player and every move made by the Flames and then trash any player or coach that leaves the SECOND they're out there door.

The whole site sees it, it's so funny that you try to play it off as rational. You can be a homer, honestly, but at least just own it. You've called like 40+ huge Flames posters - 'fans of other teams' or 'non Flames fans', and thrown out dozens of bet offers at every turn.

Now having said what I said, I admire your passion and honestly wish I could follow the Flames the way you do (no sarcasm). I'm cynical to this organization and find faults all along the way and too far am proven right and it affects my ability to find joy in watching my team play hockey and I hate that.

I love side bets because it gives me something to follow during the season, so if you're willing, despite me being a jack a** at times, I'll take you up on a friendly wager of $100 for the Pens getting 95 points or more.

It's kinda crazy to evaluate Karlsson rationally because anything under 70 points seems like it's 'really bad'...but it's just really bad for him. 50+ pt defensemen are still a pretty rare breed.

Karlsson had an outlier career low season a few years ago (35 pt pace). Otherwise his second worst season since he was a teenager was a 57 point pace.

If he's only scoring 57 points of course he'll be really overpaid, but that still put him 14th in p/gp among D-men season before last

He's basically guaranteed to be overpaid but is he more productive than the guys he was traded for? Thats what matters. This is kind of like a Neal for Lucic type deal in a way.

Well one guy scored 101 points while Neal had a career low 7 and Lucic was a 4th line face puncher not sure how it's similar.

Also that's 3 100 point players traded the last 2 off season is this a first?

Yeah I've followed the Panthers since Barkov got drafted. I try not to be an a-hole about it and also feel like I can share some info about them here that maybe people aren't aware of. But you seem to have an urge to take a dump on them anytime possible and especially on the ex-flames.

And by the way you calling anyone, I mean literally anyone else biased is the definition of irony.

The Sharks wanted out of the Karlsson contract so bad they basically gave him free reign last season to pump up his offensive stats at the expense of defense. Worked out pretty good turning an untradeable contract into a first round pick a year later.

Good move for the Pens too. Karlsson on the power play will be enough to get them into the playoffs and they have enough depth to limit his 5 on 5 ice time.

Not sure I'm buying the bolded bits, given these numbers:

Dude Sage cheers for the Panthers...maybe he cheers for the Flames too but he cheers very hard for the Panthers. Like 75% of his posts are about the Panthers

you just follow me around looking to be critical...Sage is a panthers fan and is biased about them...never said I wasn't about the Flames

how many people actually think that team is gonna "run it back" They got absolutely obliterated when their goaltending wasn't all world.
