Jack Russell terrier save kids from pit bulls [mrg]
Alas, the story has a sad ending as the dog had to be put down due to injuries sustained. He is most defiitely a hero.

hero terrier saves 5 kids against 2 pitbulls
A plucky 30-centimetre-high Jack Russell terrier named George saved five New Zealand children from two marauding pitbulls but was so severely mauled in the fight he had to be destroyed, his owner said Wednesday.

Neat story. Just in case anyone was wondering, pitbulls are also terriers.

Gay said the pitbulls' owner surrendered the pair to dog control officers and demanded they be destroyed, claiming they had launched unprovoked attacks previously.
Sad story. At least the owner was reasonable about the incident. I don't have much sympathy for the owners who want to keep their dogs who have attacked people or other animals.
EDIT: Whoa two of the same threads at the exact same time. Now taking bets on which ones stays.
EDIT2: A merge? touche.

Never underestimate the determination of a pet when it's pack (family that owns him/her, friends of the family, etc.) is threatened or attacked. Poor little guy. It's a shame he had to go out like that but at least he met with a hero's ending.

My parents had a Jack Russell that could climb trees. Tenacious little fellers.

Here's a pic of my JRT
In a way I'm not real surprised that it took on a few pit bulls. The JRT was originally bred with the stamina to run with a pack of horses and the tenacity to take on foxes and Badgers at the same time, and seem to have it hard wired into their brain that they don't give up in a fight. I've seen mine on many occasion go after dogs up to 4 times his size if they're not submissive enough for his liking, and if not for quick intervention would probably end up on the short end of a dog fight.
Still, it's sad to see that there's still bangers in the world that have pit bulls (or any other agressive breed) and don't train them properly.

When I was 6, it was a miracle I wasn't killed by a pit bull. I was playing outside all day long, my dad called and told me to go inside because it was going to thunder outside, about 15 minutes later a guy was walking a pit bull and he lost control of it as it chased a gopher up a drainage pipe, the pit ate THROUGH the metal trough cutting it's mouth up... blood everywhere completely enraged...
If I had stayed outside I probable would have a couple mangled limbs right now. It's funny because there was no thunderstorm at all.
I am very bitter against Pit Bulls... If I saw one in the street attacking a child, or someone else's pet. I'd instantly run and grab my Katana and destroy the pit bull myself.
What's stupid is that i'd probably be charged and thrown in jail, but i'd do it to save a child.

I knew a Jack Russell who tried to climb imaginary trees. Some of them are crazy l'il fellers. I have good natured Golden Retriever, and a Jack Russell is the only dog he's ever snapped at (and that's because the Jack Russell wouldn't leave him alone).
Energetic dogs, to say the least.

To me they are works of art, but also baby savers
Seriously though, if you saw a child getting ragdolled by a pit bull or any dog would you sit idly by?
Katana, or Baseball bat... I'm saving the kid.

go for the ribs, if they can't breathe they'll let go. Or the balls. A German Shepherd had my little dog in its mouth and wouldn't let go until I kicked it in the nuts.

We also have a 2 year old Jack Russell....he's a handful, but so adorable that you can't stay mad at him. He used to get out of the yard once in a while.......
Ever try catching a Jack Russell on the lam?
