Perhaps this is how rumors start. In St. Louis lots of talk on Tarasenko not signing at the start of free agency. Blues radio saying how it was well known that Tarasenko was not good influence on Kyrou, Thomas etc so young teams should steer clear and only contenders with strong rooms might be able to deal with him. But those teams don’t have cap space. Some thought Nashville would be interested, but Jamie Rivers (a Blues ‘insider’) said ROR hate’s Tarasenko and helped kybosh that

This was always the other shoe that has to drop on the DeBrincat trade. Pretty good move by the Sens, get a player of comparable ability and picked up some futures for a guy who was not going to sign and would have cost more money this year.
Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux
Batherson - Norris - Tarasenko
If healthy that should be a top six that has 3 80+ point guys and 3 60+ point guys
Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - Chychrun
Backend is pretty good, only question is the goaltending.

The Flames do not have the cap space.
They would have had to do something like trade Hanifin or Lindholm for futures, sign Tarasenko and then trade him for futures at the deadline. The Flames do not want to supercharge a rebuild, they are in it to win it this year.

Apparently Tarasenko turned down a 1 year, $6 million offer from San Jose. Speculation is that he is tight with the Tkachuk family from his time in St. Louis and Brady Tkachuk may have played a role in him signing with Ottawa.

Coincidentally, Tarasenko was drafted by St. Louis with an Ottawa draft pick. They traded their 1st to St. Louis for Rundblad several years ago, and St. Louis used that pick to draft Tarasenko.

They're a great young team on the upswing, Dino. Like **** me not everything needs to be a Peter Hanlon level defence of your beloved Flames, it's gets really tiring how many posts you dedicate to the cause. Sometimes we can just talk about the NHL and how teams are doing, lol.

lol shut up...I didn't even mention the Flames, and look who I was talking to
last summer everyone was saying how great the Sens would be too...that trade was a disaster for them
and how the #### are they doing!? pretty #### last I checked
they will probably miss the playoffs AGAIN
a "great young team on the upswing" that traded the 7th overall pick last season for a player that didn't want to be there, wow amazing management

And like yeah, the super young team did improve. Despite missing their young top 6 center for the entirety of the year, and their young number 1 defenseman for significant amount, they went from 73 points to 86 points. Now new owners coming in.
Probably a misstep with Debrincat, but the risk turned a 7th overall in a bad draft into a 1st round pick in a future draft and Kubalik, a past 30 goal scorer. There has been worst trades.

It is clear you are trying to get in front of an argument that promotes rebuilding through the draft as Ottawa appears to be very much ready to turn a corner. They got pretty close in 2017 and spent the next couple of years stripping their team down. They hit a grand slam in the Karlsson trade as they scored their 2 top centers from that deal. They were smart to get their Tkachuk to commit to 7 years out of ELC and while it looked like an overpay at first glance he is more than worth the full value of the deal 2 years in.
They paid their young core players on big extensions so to try and speed up the process they moved 1at round picks for 25-26 year olds with team control. Debrincat didn’t work out and the assets they got back are not as good as the ones they sent out but in the immediate short term they filled the hole left by Debrincat with this Tarasenko signing and bolstered their bottom 6 with Kubalik. They also went out and acquired Chychrun to join Sanderson and Chabot as a strong top 3 on the blueline.
I wasn’t a huge fan of what Ottawa was doing but the way Stutzle and Sanderson are breaking out and Tkachuk’s continued development has me thinking they are definitely the Canadian franchise that is most on the rise.

Outside of Chychrun they have their main pieces locked down or under team control for the next 5 years. Based on intel that I got from a buddy who is friends with the new owners kids I think they are intending on spending to cap so I suspect they will re-sign Chychrun next summer. Only real question mark is goaltending. When your seven core players are 21, 21, 23, 23, 24, 25, 25 you can reasonably expect to get better not worse over the next 3-4 years.

I don't think the Flames will ever again chase 30+ players signing them past 35.
Now the Sens have a great lineup, with a high risk - Giroux will be 36 this season and Taresenko 32. 11.5 cap hit so they HAVE to deliver. If they drop off their top-6 is not that solid.
They also have to be somewhat concerned with Norris who basically shown the potential to be a top 6 player. He had almost the same year as Mangiapane in 2021-22. Both seemed to be really good chance to be solid top-6 players and now both have to step up and prove it.
Batherson has the WJC 2018 shadow lingering over him.

Potential to be a top 6 player? The guy who scored 35 goals in 66 games (44 goal pace) as a 22 year old in his sophomore season? In the top 100 for points/game that season? Nah, he's topping up as a fourth liner at best...
The concern with Norris is his shoulder injury history, not his play or "potential."
