I feel bad for people who sacrificed like the rest of us and still had bad outcomes, either health, mental or financial.

My self and my family made some sacrifices but everything worked out. For that I’m very fortunate.

The societal divide that it furthered almost felt inevitable and covid just sped it along.

I'm impressed but not surprised that Fotze is drunk this early.

This is a great point. The only people I really see still banging the drum are the deniers who are just desperate for validation that they were right.

The rest of us have moved on and are greatful to get back to normal life.

The truth is we will never know how bad it could have gotten because before it got there preventative measures were put in place.

Nothing was perfect, we didn't really know what we were dealing with to be honest. We just knew it was the perfect storm of an interconnected world and a fast spreading virus.

Not all measures were necessary I am sure, and some were timed wrong as well, but at the end of the day the only way to truly know how things could have gone would be a controlled study.

And there is something about using human lives to research potential disease implications that is unethical I guess.. the Nazi's probably would have given it a go though.

I wanted to touch on this because there are other anecdotal accounts in just this thread, when I got COVID it took me 4-6 months to get over some of the side-effects and get some energy back.

And I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'm probably half your friends' age?

We have to bare in mind that we dont know what we dont know and this thing kicked everyone's ass just a little differently.

Not to mention the social battering we took. The isolation, the separation, the divides and ostracization based on race and religion...we saw some ugly, ugly stuff and it hasnt gone away.

Apart from all the medical stuff , the biggest ramifications are IMO is still supply chain issues that I don't think will ever return to "normal". I work in industry and just trying to get parts for equipment is a never ending battle.

Stuff that was kept in stock that we could just order and get in a week or less is now month away from hitting our site. Other stuff we need to get our ducks in a row because stuff is like 8 months out. So we make these huge orders not knowing when it will actually come and the budget is thrown out of wack so you need to explain to some corporate bean counter who thinks we want to do this when all we are doing is trying to do is keep the plant running. And not to mention prices have skyrocketed.

Also the quality of everything seems to fallen off a cliff. We get parts that are just not finished. Or not what we ordered. Some parts picker must be some young kid who is not being supervised. Support from vendors is the same story. We get technicians who simply don't know anything and we pay big $$$ for a 20 year old kid to tell us what we know already. There seemed to be lots more turnover in industry so we are all struggling.

In short is sucks. Everything seemed to be in some kind of equilbrium. That month off that everyone had in April/May 2020 sure messed things up.

I think we mix some stuff up that was exacerbated by the pandemic but not caused by it.

There's been a lot of serious things come up since that were maybe tangentially related but already trending this way. Things like polarization of society, labour crunch, market fragility, rapidity of changes in the job market (ie, different jobs being at risk while others surge), climate change, etc. It's all piled on relatively quickly to create a maelstrom of poop and it feels like the pandemic kicked it all off

I got a nasty bout of covid last year and it took a long time to recovered compounded by other injuries I sustained while recovering.

I still don't feel normal and my breathing and getting tired quickly has never been the same again.

In some ways, in my darkest moments, I kinda wish it had ravished humanity unchecked and caused us to collectively go 'whoa, we need to get our #### together' rather than affecting people so diametrically differently and causing the hate, isolation, the separation, the divides and ostracization based on race and religion and politics and intelligence and science.

It's really very strange how it all played out for a so called intelligent and technologically advanced species in the 21st century.

We are still teasing out all the ramifications and i hope we take some time to reflect back on what worked and what didn't. Here in Alberta we were probably a month to late for everything. From opening up to shutting down. Also, shutting down small business while letting the big box guys thrive was a big downside.

Things that we overshot...

1) Shutting down schools. Masks are good but the social ramifications in kids and teenagers is going to have downstream effects. Certainly having online school as an option is a good thing for those that wanted it. Even that was "do this or that and decide right now" instead of allowing someone to come and go.

2) 12+ Kids having to be vaccinated/have weekly tests to participate in activities really took things too far. Especially as we knew at the time that it was not serious for kids.

3) Someone having to isolate for 14 days AFTER everyone else in the house recovered and were cleared to return to work/school. My youngest had to miss 28 days of sports and school because he never tested positive.

------------------

Positives:

A big advancement in technology around MRNA vaccines and medical science. Learning on the go about how to manage someone with COVID will actually allow for less deaths going forward from viruses like the flu and RSV. RSV vaccines being fast-tracked for pregnant women and young children could save a bunch of lives.

For me, I spent 90 consecutive days with my wife and kids. When will that ever happen again.

Negatives :

Conspiracy thinking and anti-medical thinking is through the roof right now. Everyone that has a heart issue is having it blamed on "The shot". Its infuriating.

There certainly is some stuff that we really need to keep an eye on. It seems like Covid (even Omicron) has significant Neuro-penetrance and definitely had impacts on the vascular system. There are going to be downstream issues related to that.

Mental Health took a big hit for nearly everybody.

Overall human intelligence dropped like 50 points.

For some it continues to drop even further every day.

Covid walked a tightrope of being severe enough to cause major damage to health and infrastructure but not severe enough for many to take seriously. If it had killed kids at a much higher rate you can bet your ass it would have been handled differently.
