Part 3 is hard one he just went through everything with Emerson and him passing away. It's a difficult listen. It brightens up when they discuss the kids and why he's taken some of the worst hits lol.
Part 2 is one of the most interesting interviews I've ever heard he pulled the curtains back.
Hartley was a terrible person who tore rooms apart and when you fought back it would never be the same. He did say as far as preparation he was one of the better coaches and was detailed with line match ups and roles for players. Ran a simple system according to him.
Brent Sutter had no handle of the room and told Stajan he would break him down and build him back up for no reason. Had no clear role for him or ever told him here he stood until the before the end of his tenure. Could feel the tension with Darryl hanging around and them got getting along.
He used the word weird to describe the vibe of the team when he got here and it lasted until Hartley came in and some guys got shipped out.
Said a divide existed in the room with two groups one wanting to play defensive and one wanting to play offensive. Kipper was a calming guy in the room.
Said we drafted so poorly we had no impact forwards until Sean and Johnny came in and it was a missing ingredient with the Iginla group.
Burke was great to him. Not much about Treliving that I can remember him saying. Burke was a big catalyst for motivating ttem down the stretch to make the playoffs in 14/15.
Hagman and White never fit in or found a role in Calgary.
Fans would attack him and his wife verbally for him not producing and his wife would yell back and he had to calm her down. Embarrassing to hear that from our end those idiots should turn in their fan card.
He acknowledged that he was never going to be a #1 C and knew that and wanted to be put in the 2ns or 3rd line role and kill penalties. Said that was his skillset and he was being tossed between the 1st and 4th line.
Stayed in Calgary because he felt he owed it to the team because they traded for him and he felt a bit obligated to stay.
That's what I can remember from part 2 haven't listened to part 1.

Honestly that's pretty gross to hear. If it really does happen often like that here, then frankly we deserve the team we get. Wives talk amongst themselves and sway their husband's decisions and people in those circles gossip about it. Not every fan obviously, but exhibit A of why nobody wants to come here.

Impossible not to think about all the disparaging things people have said about Monahan while he was playing hurt.

Imagine the fan’s frame of mind that you want to yell at a pro player on a day off that he sucks. In front of his wife. And the guy is stajan. Not bourque or James Neal or Brouwer. Matt frickin stajan. The hell is wrong with people.

He sounds like a really stand up guy and it's sad to hear that as a city we couldn't treat him better. Jesus Christ even EA Sports mispronounced his names in the NHL games.

You cover things well, I just thought I'd also add, I found it interesting that Stajan says he has a pretty good relationship with Brent, though he thought he could have approached certain things a bit differently when he was coach, particularly his being way too set in his ways when it came to personnel.
I thought it was interesting as well that Warrener and Stajan said that on different occasions that both coaches of that time, Keenan and B. Sutter pulled guys aside to specifically ask what the hell was wrong with the dressing room and why there was such a weird dynamic. Both players talked about how it wasn't an unfriendly room, but there was a clear divide between offensive and defensive philosophy and while there were good leaders on the team, there were just way too many veterans coming and going and everyone had a different idea on what it would take for them to be successful and neither coach did well in reining that in.
Stajan implied that when Hartley came in, he finally got them to play together once the team was being blown up and got them to believe in themselves for a while (as we saw with the crazy year) but he was also a colossal a-hole and eventually divided the team again, before alienating the entire team against him and there was no going back from that, as much as Hartley did some things well. That's pretty much the vibe everyone gathered on Hartley already, an otherwise decent to good coach who cuts his tenures short everywhere he goes because he's such an insufferable turd.
An incredible interview anyways, it's really fascinating to have someone say outright what's been speculated on for years regarding that era of the team.

Yeah I left out the Keenan stuff and when Rhett chimed in but it was interesting.
Sounds like Rhett hated Keenan and when Keenan wanted to talk to him he thought it was a joke but asked him what is wrong with the room. He pretty much said Darryl went the opposite of everything when the lockout ended making the team old and telling the them they are a player away and didn't focus on speed and drafting. Stajan agreed with that even though he wasn't here.
Sounds like Burke tried to clean up a lot of Sutter and Feasters mess to get us back on track.
Very interesting as he is a player who is able to tie two ears of the Flames and give us a honest perspective.
Wonder what the locker room dynamic would be between Tkachuk and Hartley.

Hartley's demeanor and approach seems to have soured him everywhere. Rhett and Stajan agreed that, absent Feaster being involved, Bob would have never worked in the NHL again after Colorado.

This supports Warrener’s remarks that you get good chemistry from having a core of guys who came up together.

Not at all - it's despicable. But the post I quoted sounded like they were implying it was a Calgary thing, and I wanted to make clear it's a Canada thing, and Calgary is far from the worst of the Canadian cities.
But yeah, completely embarrassing behavior.

Ok, let’s reset here
As much as they agreed there, Stajan did acknowledge, and Rhett agreed as well, that Hartley communicated well early on, defined roles, and taught and planned well
He also said that early, Hartley did a lot of things they needed
No doubt he wore out his welcome, as many coaches do
These are two pretty average players with respectable tenures, neither of which have moved into the professional coaching ranks
He also described the mechanics of the mutiny. The team had it out in the room and ultimately decided that the coach treated a chunk of the players differently than others
Could be a strategic downfall, but if you have managed a team of people, you would also know that some people get it and do what you ask, and some don’t.
He didn’t go in to the specifics of how he treated these guys differently
It’s got to be a challenge, to get a mixed bag of people to perform to the top of their abilities all at the same time. All coaches struggle with this.
I honestly get a kick out of the oversimplification and vilification that some posters have
And I am pretty confident that most likely zero (improbably few if any) of the posters here with strong opinions have tried to rally the top tier of professionals at their craft, mainly multimillionaires, as a cohesive unit, night in and night out, to compete at a level expected to exceed that of opponents each night also comprised of top of their class pros, with top coaches
Maybe trying to unite the top half of the team with a bit more carrot and motivate the less reliable with a bit more stick is what he found worked
And Stajan and Warrener are bubble guys between carrot and stick category and could take these things personally
Hartley did shake things up and instill a much needed work ethic after nearly a decade of country club. And clearly he has a shelf life
But a good set of ears should help you understand that it’s a bit more nuanced than many people like to say
You have two guys who were able to grind out good careers sagely agreeing that a guy who curries the favour of top players at the expense of their level, saying he would’ve never coached in the league again if not for Feaster, but then he did win the Jack Adams
These things aren’t that simple

Hartley may have done some good things but I don't understand why anyone would go out of their way to defend him given what we know about how he treated people. The man was a bully plain and simple.

I got it from a pretty good source back in the day that Stajan and Giordano both told Treliving (separately) that Hartley was absolutely ruining the Flames younger players, and spoke to Bennett specifically.
That if you wanted to develop your youth Hartley had to go, because his mind games with the younger players.
Bennett stories around telling him why he wasn't playing center or playing with good players (say faceoffs), only to have Bennett work his ass off to fix the issue, and then be told another reason.
Seems to fit the Stajan comments pretty closely.
Clearly I can't vouch for the story myself.
