Since we are hitting club championship season, I’m debating on entering or not. My issue is that I will have to play from the back tees and as a 17 there is no way that should be hitting from there. I can’t figure out why they make all players under 55 play from the back tees. It’s not like it adds much yardage but there are 4 holes that really bring the trees into play on both sides lining the tee box from the back tees, I’m 50/50 on entering because of this. If my flight could hit from the regular tees, I would for sure play in the club championships.
Thats interesting, in ours the Championship flight played a Gold/Blue combo, mine was from Blues, seniors (50+) and juniors from Whites, and Ladies from Reds. I thought that made a lot of sense.

But every course is different.

Played probably my best round today. 80 at Mickelson. Ties for lowest round ever. 6 over going into 18 and I double bogey… easily my best chance to break 80.

I think that's a sign that you're on the cusp of breaking 80 and will do it soon... like hockey teams that need a heartbreaking 2nd round loss before they become perennial contenders.

Played last weekend and shot a 97. #Break90 is fading away from me and I'm not sure what happened to my game. I seem to have completely forgotten how to golf! Driver is bleeding right and coming up short, irons are fat, wedges are thin - putting is the only thing that has been decently reliable. I hit the range this week but after 120 balls I wasn't hitting anything any better. I'm perplexed as I got some good practice this winter and came out hot shooting low 90s and 44-47 on nines.

####ing golf. Oh well, back at it again this weekend - going to try hit 95 this weekend and focus on my long game, tough to play when you're dropping 8 balls a round.

indes, part of your problem sounds like you're hitting the with a target number in mind. We humans tend to be able to underperform because of the pressure we put on ourselves and having a pre-set target can lead to some really negative self-fulfilling prophecies. The best approach to take is to get to the course and don't think score. If that means going out and playing and NOT keeping score for several rounds, do just that. Get into the mindset of thinking only about making solid contact and executing shots. Don't care about the score, care only about the shot you are making.

When you focus on score you get ahead of yourself and put yourself in a poor mental state. You over-think shots you have not yet hit and you ruminate over shots that are already behind you. Train yourself to stay only in the moment and focus on the only shot you have any control over, the one you are about to hit. When you do this you'll find that your scores will naturally start to head in the right direction. This is a very hard thing to accomplish but if you focus on it you'll find quick results.

One of the guys I play with has a son who just graduated school and is about 6 months into golf. He played baseball in high school and has a tremendous amount of raw talent and ability but he has no understanding of the game itself. Playing with his dad he is good to shoot 100-110, because he's always thinking about score, score, score. I drew him in my regular men's league in a foursome game of two net with overkill. It was obvious to me who the player was that would win the day if we could keep him holes. I elected to ride with him and provide the moral support he needed, playing his conscience and cheerleader on every shot. We had conversations about strategy and club selection here and there, but we mostly talked baseball. This was with intent, to get his mind off of score and keep him in the moment when it came to making his shots. We made sure he managed the course instead of the course managing him. Long story short, he hit more pure shots than any other round he's played and scored better than any other round in his young career. His success fed everyone else's confidence and we rolled as a group. Our foursome took medalist in three of four flights and won the two net by eight strokes.

Control only what you can control, which is the shot you're standing over. Focus on making that shot to the best of your ability, then rinse and repeat. The results will surprise you.

Do you have a club you can hit off the tee more consistently when the driver is off?
I played a round with just my 3wood and driving hybrid in the bag last week (no driver) and it was eye opening. Hit 13/14 fairways, all 190-240 yards and didn't have the lost balls I get with my driver.

For every 260-280 straight drive I hit, I get 2 lost OBs or into the trees that need a punch out. I've realized my score is suffering more from my driver than benefitting from it right now.

Maybe something to try if the driver is an issue.

I'd agree with you, but I did have a putt for 79 once several years ago, and missed. But then had some knee and back surgeries, and never really got back to that place again . That's not very motivational I know

On the plus side, I find golf much more enjoyable now as a bogey-slightly better than bogey golfer while I watch my kid shoot in the 70s.

Had one of those rounds the other day where I didn't play badly by any means and just couldn't score. Drives were long and straight and would just roll through fairways under trees or into penalty areas. Hit a perfect 340 yard drive downwind and downhill on 16 at Bearspaw and had 215 into the pin & pulled my 6-iron 50 yards left and out of bounds for no reason.

Hit a perfect tee shot on 6, barely rolled into a bunker right up against the front lip. Perfect drive on 7, just slightly right and rolled through the fairway into a bush. Good tee shot on 10, rolled through fairway right behind a tree. Good tee shot on 14, right behind a tree, Good tee shot on 18, 2 yards right of the fairway and I'm right behind a tree again.

I'd say I had maybe 2 bad tee shots all day but just go so unlucky with approach positioning.

We have very different ideas of what "perfect" shots are if you end up in trouble when you hit one.

I feel your pain. I had one of those days in Alabama where every shot felt good but the result was just slightly off and finding some trouble. We all have days like that, it's how you manage it. I had a round a couple weeks ago where I hit the ball well but found trouble on every shot. Was four over after three holes. Had to regroup and really bear down. Pulled out some long irons and put the driver away for a few holes and focused on making the shot to areas where I was confident I could score from. What started out as a frustrating round turned into a very solid two over after shooting four under on the back. Sometimes you just have to play the course to get back into a grove.

I probably had 6 putts to break 80, and three putted twice to shoot 80.

The struggle is real.

Keep at it, it will happen and will probably be 77 when it does.

Is the correct answer managing it by increasing alcohol intake on the course? Because if not I may not be managing tough rounds properly.

See I take all the drama out of it by just screwing up 17, and then 18 is pressure free!

I shot rounds of 80 and 88 in our Club Championship last weekend, and last night shot 95. Thats golf. I had a 4 putt on back to back holes, dont remember doing that before. It was quite windy, where the ball was even moving a little on the greens and I guess that messed with my head a bit.

Those two 4 putts were birdie opportunities that became double bogeys lol.

Long story short, golf is hard!

We are going to be in PEI for a week. We would like to golf once. Is there a course that anyone could recommend?

I just booked a stay at the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort in Miami in November and I'll need to decide if I want to pay the big bucks to golf one of the courses. Apparently it is $375USD plus tax and caddie tip. As much as I'd like to do it I think I am too poor for that. I don't think that includes rental clubs either.

Do Florida courses overseed? You might not want to play if the answer is yes. It won't be very good.

That far south in Florida, they shouldn't. Bermuda will stay green all winter, at least the ones we've played.

It says that November through April is peak season so I would expect the courses to be in great condition.

Only play one round of golf in PEI and the only acceptable answer is Crowbush Cove. The value is just ridiculous.

I have heard Crowbush Cove is "the course" to play on PEI.
