Default Miikka Kiprusoff stories on Spittin Chiclets interivew with Brian Boucher

Spittin Chiclets released an interview with Brian Boucher the other day (entire interview is great BTW) and he mentions some of the goalies he played with in his career and goes off on a small tangent on Calgary Flames legend Miikka Kiprusoff.

And since Kipper is such an elusive legend, hearing any stories on him is amazing.

Kipper part starts at 59 minutes and 59 seconds….

Boucher on Kipper:

Quote:
I think he’d go into the steamer after every game and he’d crush a 6 pack.
Quote:
This guy was soooo good, and he wouldn’t even sweat. He’d just sit in his stall and you wouldn’t even know he was alive, he’d look like a homeless guy like sitting there in the room.
Quote:
He’d wait till the 7 minute mark, he gets up, puts his gear on and he goes out there and makes like 47 saves. And he doesn’t sweat. Never seen anything like it. And he looked like he didn’t have a care in the world. But unreal talent that guy.
LEGEND

You could tell, I remember during that run any time he'd make a big save, or let in a goal -he'd put his helmet up, take a drink of water and had visibly no emotion on his face. I don't think I've seen a goalie (or another person for that matter) who seemingly couldn't be rattled, or controlled by his emotions in big moments.

Pretty much the perfect temperament for being a goalie.

Yeah, you simply could not rattle him.

Either the guy had ice water running through his veins or it wasnt water in that bottle...

You'd think so but then there have been so many successful goalies who are hot-heads: Patrick Roy, Hasek, Tim Thomas, Ed Belfour, Ron Hextall, Billy Smith.

Besides, sacrificially slaughtering goats under a blood-moon in the misty fjords doesn't exactly scream even temperament.

I think at the end of the day to choose a job where people are shooting a hard rubber disk at you as hard as they can indicates a certain amount of 'crazy' is inherently required.

Now....where you place on the 'Crazy Spectrum' seems to be entirely arbitrary and up to personal preference.

You got Kipper 'Nothing Bothers Me' Crazy and you've got Ron "I'm gonna feed you my blocker' Hextall crazy.

You've got to be on that spectrum someplace....just not in the middle. Because in the middle you get....Markstrom.

Yeah I can't remember which player said it, but I remember some kind of "well, first of all you already have to be crazy to be willing to stand in front of 100mph shots for a living..." quote from somewhere.

I love Kipper. He can probably excel at anything he does. Never too high, never too low. I wish he was mayor of Calgary.

He could crush beer at the St. Louis and still do the job better than anyone else, effortlessly.

Surprised Boucher didn’t mention Kipper’s smoking habit…

Well he did mention that kipper had a dip in his top lip while he was talking about him looking like a homeless guy.

I believe that's a direct quote from every player that's not a goalie.

Yeah, goalies are kind of like serial killers.
You have the rampaging scary ones, and the quiet, nothing behind the eyes ones.

Thought there should be a link, the whole Boucher interview is gold, starts about 22 minutes in.

Not a huge Spittin Chiclets fan, but that's a great interview. Boucher is really entertaining and very candid.

Boucher was one of my favourite goalies growing up, since I also love Philly. He was amazing in their 2000 playoff run. I was really hoping he could turn into the Flyers version of Brodeur. I should’ve known better, since it’s goaltending and the Flyers (post-1987 Hextall). I was so stoked when we got him in ‘06, and disappointed that it didn’t work out. I thought he’d be a perfect backup for Kipper. Loved this interview, thanks for sharing!

I love how Iggy is just "Iggy" to everybody. They're like,

"...yeah they had, like, Shane Doan..."

"Iggy"

"...Darcy Tucker... yeah, Iggy... Tyson Nash..."

Boucher was weird, he was a total back up goalie when he was brought in, but in my group was so excited and treated him like we brought in a starter. The "boooouuuu" chants were very loud. It was awesome.
