ALL ABOARD!

This week's was a classic Trek episode but really enjoyable. Still not a huge fan of Kirk (either of them).
Only 4 more episodes left. I'm fine with most series running 10-13 episodes these days but I really wish we got the old-school 22 episodes for SNW.

SNW benefits from not having a story arc they need to shoehorn into each episode. If you don’t have great writers (not saying SNW doesn’t), stick to episodic TV.

Poor writers write characters as "edgy" to create conflict and drama because it looks good on paper and covers up a lack of writing talent and skill. The first two seasons of Picard were full of "edgy" horrible characters.
Discovery did the same thing with the usual bridge drama while the hapless faceless anonymous crew they never bothered to write anything about had nervous looks on their faces as Burnam and the Captain of the Day had their usual floor dispute.
Either the streaming age has destroyed good writing with its terrible demands and low pay/residuals (hence the current writers strike), or somehow the next generation of good writers just never materialized this century.

Pretty much, not their strongest but still enjoyable. I'm still not liking the shoe-horning of Kirk in there as much as possible, I dont get that, but a solid Uhura episode and Starfleet once again being 'the good guys.'

Worst part is Sam Kirk isn't just James Kirk with a moustache.

Star Trek General Discussion
The Jim Kirk actor reminds me too much of Jimmy Carr.

I still remember I think it was in season 1 and Discovery was under attack and taking fire. And they're having a meeting on the bridge, so they can declare Michael as the savior.
Or when Tilley is leading her team on some thing and the Oxygen is running out and they stop so Tilley can have a leadership I love you speech moment.
Like I can forgive a lot of things in character development. But when you literally write your characters to do stupid things for illogical reasons I start praying for their painful and prolonged deaths.

I actually really liked the new kirk in this episode. He seemed more like young kirk than he has in other iterations, which makes sense because we've only seen alternate universe and future wrong timeline him before. Thought he was a much better representation this time around.
Good episode. Another new take on a classic, though I called living nebula about 3 minutes in lol. I hope they rip 20 episodes of this next season.

This is such a great show. Even mediocre episodes are entertaining.
A highlight from this week is the phrase "Space Hippie", last week was Spock screaming into a pillow.

Worst episode is the Toronto one and it's still better than like 95% of Discovery.

It was an ok episode, but it was a really predictable mash up of Star Trek Stories that I would think most people figured out early.
Of course the character stuff was top knotch, especially Carol Kane who continues to be brilliant.

I must have a completely off-kilter opinion of this season, but this was the only episode so far that didn’t keep my attention the whole way throughout. I guess I am just not a huge fan of the Uhura or Una character so I tuned out a bit when they were on screen.

I would say that of all of his inclusions in this Universe this was his strongest outing.

Yeah, yesterday's episode was a little predictable—I too called "non-corporeal entity(-ies) living in the nebula" a few minutes into the episode —but I still enjoyed it.
I liked the nice little callback to Hemmer helping Uhura out. I thought about it later and it makes a lot of narrative sense that the nebula aliens would use visions of Hemmer to convince Uhura to help them. Based on Uhura's memories, he was the embodiment of "helper": he was a mentor to her the entire time they knew each other, all he ever did was help.
The idea that the attempts to communicate were "too forceful" reminded me of a couple of old storylines:
1. V'ger in The Motion Picture had been trying to communicate with basically every entity it came across, but it wasn't until Spock realized that the frequency/amount of data V'ger was sending out was far higher than they were used to that they were able to put it together and send a message back.
2. Troi slowly being driven mad by "Kevin Uxbridge" in the TNG episode "The Survivors" (S3E3). In this case it wasn't an attempt to communicate, but rather Kevin trying to conceal his actions and identity from her by totally overwhelming her mind with the music from his wife's music box. The sound driving her crazy made me think of the "BWAAAH!©" that Uhura and Ramone were being 'bombarded' with.

My kid randomly got into Power Rangers recently, so I've been watching too.
Let me tell you, even power rangers has better writing and character development than discovery.
