Decided on the player I wanted about three weeks ago. Got him. In the business we call that a "Whole in won"

Jenner was the guy I wanted and got him. Went after Matheson but got out bid by quite a bit.

Really happy to add Matheson. Was torn on what to offer him contract wise. Was hoping to try and offer in the high 3s and land him, in the end I offered all the cap I had to bring him in. Very interested to see if I could have cheaped out and grabbed him for cheaper.

In the end adding a 76ov D really helps our depth.

Only issue I had with Matheson is if he'd stay at that OA for the length of the contract BUT at the dollar amount you got him at I think he's going to end up worth it. I didn't think he'd go sub 6.

We had soo much money that we decided that the franchise was ready for some top end guys. Today we added 3 top end players but it has been a 3 year journey to this point. We started off as a small budget franchise and now have brought in Ovie, Kopitar to join the cast. We weren't sure which way to go but in the decided that our top end of the roster was something we wanted to spend money on. We could have taken a conservative approach but without our 1st Rounder this year, we are hell bent on making the playoffs

That Hyman contract is the type of deal I'd expect any other GM except Grant to sign. Frankly a little perplexing.

I think you've done a great job building Washington. You've been patient, made solid trades, and slowly chipped away at things.

Kopitar and Ovechkin I suspect you could have had for less, but you knew who you wanted and vet guys always seem to perform well in the SIM.

There has been a clear strategy with your moves.

Well done.

I feel bad for cheaping out on Spurgeon. $3.85 per.

A couple hundred k off of OV, next year I think it’s best that we spent a little more on our DVD package to try and lane more high end free agents

I was kind of hoping for this too. The bids were a lot higher than in the past so I'm interested to see if it was just a few GMs really going for their guys or if UFA prices are going up in general.

It probably influences how people will bid in the follwoing batches too. Jiri, if you have time could you post it?

I think these are right but here is the spread between the winning bids and next closest, in terms of total value.

Kopitar: 10.41
AO: 8.97
Patrice Bergeron: 1 offer only
Zach Hyman: 16.2
Logan Couture: 5.94
Evander Kane: 1.5
Boone Jenner: 5.56

Roman Josi: 10.97
Burns: 8.1
Lindholm: 0
Matheson: 3.63
Spurgeon: 0.81
Skjeki: 1.77

Kuemper: 1.98
Bobrovsky: 3.39
Markstrom: 3.12

Damn. I overpaid on Burns big time. I was going to send a bid of around 4.5 then worried it was too low.

Also I think Jiri's bid on Hyman proves he DEFINITELY doesn't look at other bids before putting his own in. 😁😁

Well I could have went with my gut feeling and bid in the high 3s on Matheson. That being said I’m happy with landing him and don’t regret throwing out the extra 500k or so a season.

It is tough to gauge where bids are going to be. Some people like myself might spend more on something they want to and overpay. I didn't think twice about the goalie market and apparently someone might rather have Jordan Bennington. Interesting stuff.

Binningtons tantrums/60 is top among all goaltenders. We need that fire after our sad display in the 2nd round last year.
