Take Colorado for example. They want a c who can pk. Some of the options listed don’t fit that mold. But backs does. And they’ve shown interest in him in the recent past. So they may like backs than others that are out there.

I’d rather keep Backlund to UFA than tie up a retention spot to get a third for him.

The chance to get Younger on the fly also. I would trade Backlund and take a stab at Boqvist. 24 year old Centre. Could be a Backlund in a few years and thats a win.

And if you’re trading Backlund, it’s to make room in the top 6 for Ruzicka who’s already proven he can score at an elite rate for short bursts. Not to pick up waiver fodder trash from the UFA pile.

Really irks me that absolutely nothing has been done to address our size/toughness, especially after losing Lucic. We need another couple of guys who can hit, fight, and intimidate, or we'll get steamrolled every game. Austin Watson is a guy who can skate, kill penalties, and stick up for teammates- and he's available as a UFA. There's also Nick Ritchie, Max Comtois, and Cal Foote.

Boston (mistakenly put the Devils) signed him a few days or so ago now.
That proposal from the Avs is awful, tough market or not. I'm glad Conroy's holding firm if that's the stuff being thrown around. Lets other teams know we're not simply going to let assets go for nothing. If a 3rd is the best we can get, I'd rather lose him for nothing just to show other GMs Lindholm and Hanifin aren't going to come cheap.
As much of a distraction as it could be (and injuries being a possibility), as teams look to add around the trade deadline, it'll be Conroy standing firm now, plus the fear of a competing team landing Lindhom/Hanifin/Backlund at a very palatable cap hit (even before consideration of retention), that will drive returns.

It was actually Boston that signed Boqvist.

100% agree with this. Hopefully Conroy has something coming up to address this.

It irked me more that we had excess of this last season at the expense of speed and energy. With Zadorov on the roster, I think the fighting is under control. I think there’s less a need for this in the modern game.

Flames are better off keeping Backlund. He's likely better than any replacement you'll get and his return at the deadline will almost certainly be higher unless he has a poor year. A repeat of last year and I'd imagine you get at least a 2nd.

Sure hope they go in with the St. Louis Blues plan. The Blues grabbed three firsts or former firsts, a second and a third at the deadline last year. Definitely the possibility for the Flames to grab the same or more if they don’t make any moves first over the summer.

Zadorov will fight when he needs to, but he’s not very good at it.
I think they’ll bring someone to camp on a PTO and go from there. Probably Ritchie tbh.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Zadorov doesn't fight at all, really but when did the Flames need this? The guys they did have wouldn't do it when it was called for anyway. Poor Chris Tanev who should have been protected by his teammates was dragged into a fight against the Rangers and no one did anything about it. Play fast, avoid the big hits, take the PP. Beat them where it counts.

Toughness sure, Flames require speed and skill to be added, especially on the wing.
If they want any hope at playoff spot.
However, its hard to tell the direction, if this will be a "retool", once a couple players are traded.

I believe Conroy specifically criticized Brad for bringing PTOs into camp. I expect that the team will mostly be the team and several players from the Wranglers will make the squad.

What intimidation or toughness did Lucic really bring last year?
That was such an overrated aspect of his game for the Flames IMO.

Walker Duehr will be a full time Flame next season. More exciting than Looch in the bottom 6 IMO

Yup. I prefer no plugs that are just there to look mean. If there is a younger guy who can play 4th line and be mean then sure.
