Brilliant, though you'd get me with that once and only once. Next time I'd be ready with some important meeting I couldn't miss.

Somewhat related, but we have a guy that fixes up our forklifts and stuff here who always comes in and tries to explain everything to me like I'm also a mechanic. 5 min conversation of what different things he tightened and checked and different parts he used and looked at and I'm just kind of blank stare the whole time and at the end have to say "...so it's fixed?" Same with when we have trades guys over to the house to fix problems, some of them just go on and on about what they're doing...
If you're in any sort of trade just assume we don't know anything you're talking about. That's why you're here fixing it, not me, lol.

That’s probably a good thing since it wasn’t expected to be a mic drop moment. Expecting that on CP seems a little desperate IMO.

We were talking specifically about the customer coming in before close and whether or not it is reasonable to consider said customer a dbag for doing so. Whatever the hell the employer violating labour laws in your made-up scenario has to do with the customer is beyond me.
|
Yeah we’re determining whether or not the customer doing so is a dbag move, so it probably makes sense to have the perspective of all parties affected, no?

I'm based my opinion on five different establishments I've worked at in both front and back of house; three restaurants, two bars... y'know, the relevant food service industry jobs we're talking about. "Last call" in my post was shorthand for drinks and / or food orders before the kitchen starts shutting down. Plenty of restaurants these days have the drink orders (even soft drinks) fulfilled by the bar, instead of servers going to the gun or fountain themselves.
|
I’d be rather shocked if you’ve worked at that many places and never ran into a situation where customers try to hang around well past close to chat. I have a lot of friends in the industry and I see enough of it at times just waiting for them to finish closing to know that it’s not exactly a rare occurrence.
I stand by my position that customers should expect service until close but they also should leave at close and that there are other factors for employees not being thrilled about serving someone who walks in 5 mins before close beyond the employee simply being unreasonable.

I like "Let me just stop you there..." as though you have some critical point for which you must interject... and then say nothing and go about doing whatever you were doing.

No. Not when we are talking about something outside the realm of typical. The employer not paying staff properly is not relevant to this discussion unless you want to start considering countless other completely out-of-left-field variables that have yet to be factored in. Moving on...

It happened all the time, so we dealt with it appropriately. What did you think I was implying with "they are all but invited to finish their meal, and leave"? We were nice, we chatted with them, and we made it very clear -- albeit politely -- that it's time to GTFO as soon as is feasible. Not saying "GTFO" but not giving them any reason to stay other than they haven't finished their meals. When the dining room is closed, you check with the table if the bill is together or separate, etc. because the bill is coming out pronto; there will be no additional charges, so you pay, you finish your meal, and out you go.
Also, to mitigate this kind of thing, a lot of places have a 'last seating' time where they won't seat tables or take reservations past a certain time to ensure tables don't go too far past closing. But then they'll tell you flat out that's the case instead of begrudgingly seating you.

I was going to reply to iggy_oi with exactly that statement but decided not to be a dick. That courtesy was not reciprocated. Oh well, at least the marks on my forehead from the bricks will start to fade now.

Are you typically this petty when someone disagrees with you or are making a special exception in this case?

You replied with "your opinion has been noted" like a dick, don't be surprised when you get treated like a dick in response. [shrug]
Edit: Let me just stop you right there...

There’s a lot of people who could tell you that saying that to me won’t achieve the outcome you’re hoping for.
That being said I’m enjoying your attempts here.

I'm not sure there's much that could be said to you to achieve the desired outcome, hence the brick wall marks on my forehead.

Stop what? The post has already been made
Just to get this back on track, your position now is that an anonymous stranger saying something as non combative as “your opinion has been noted” is a dick move but people forcing food service staff to stay late is perfectly reasonable. I think I understand your position, I still don’t agree with it but I’ll stop short of saying your opinion has been noted seeing as the sort of thing appears to be a sore spot.

Providing reasonable arguments instead of just getting pissy in response would work wonders. Or keep doing what you’re doing, maybe it’ll work out for you eventually.

You gotta admit that if you’re going to hit someone with a “show me on the doll where the posts hurt you” line, this is an A+ response.
I want to believe this doll was created for this exact reason.

I don’t know Pepsi, in proportion to the rest of the head that brain looks a little underdeveloped to be honest.
Me and TorqueDog may not see eye to eye on the issue we were discussing but I’ll be dammed if I’m gonna just sit here while you insult the size of his brain unprovoked.

No no no, don’t do this, you’re trying too hard. We all know the doll isn’t him, the doll is what he’s using to show you where the posts hurt him. Like, in therapy, I don’t imagine you get a lot of people saying “Whoa, doc, that doll don’t look anything like me.”
Instead, let’s acknowledge what we saw. You just have to take the L and appreciate the art on this one. There’s no coming back from the doll comment. KO.
