If you trade him now for a 4th you probably drive up the value of your own first and you get rid of the risk that ownership does not approve the trade at the deadline. Sure, we can all say trade him for a 2nd at the deadline but what if Murray says missing the playoffs isn't worth a 2nd. What if he gets hurt?
If you make the moves now there is a better chance our pick is a top 5 pick. How many teams would trade 10-15 overall pick and a 2nd to move up to top 5? Every team in the league would. The 2nd is not that valuable as just moving on from all these guys wanting out.

Completely agree. And I suspect that there will be a team imposed window for him to re-sign (in a world where he wants to see how the new management and coaching staff impact the room and team performance) and if he doesn’t re-up then he’s traded after that deadline mid season. Now could get injured of course but you just have weigh the risk of a likely meaningless return versus a guy needed to show what he’s got in the last year of a contract.

Here is another scenario that seems to be not being considered when deciding if we should just move Backlund now.
What if the Flames are in the playoffs at the deadline by 2-5 points, keep Backlund as Murray prefers the playoff revenue over a 2nd(10% or so chance the guys is a player) and the Flames fall out of the playoffs after the deadline?
Trade him now.

Eh, if the Flames are in a playoff spot and Backlund is only getting a second then I'm fine keeping him.
Feels like with the last round of trades that that they wouldn't get much even with heavy retention.

It depends on the other moves but if Hanifin does move and Lindholm moves this team is not winning anything next year. I'd just rather see a new younger player take Backlund's spot and let him chase a cup elsewhere.
If Lindholm stays and the Hanifin trade is a good one, maybe we keep Backlund as see what happens come playoff time.

Backlund will return more than a 2nd. Some crazy takes around here.

You would have thought Toffoli would return more than what he did as well, but the market is what it is. With the tight cap, I don’t see much more than a 2nd.
Also though, don’t undervalue a 2nd.

Translation(ish) from someone who has presumably read the whole article...

Basically, the same thing Backlund has said in other interviews (and I'd guess probably the same attitude as Lindholm).

Marc savard made an interesting comment in his interview that they want to change the culture and have guys enjoy being here so they end up staying.
Wonder if he know these guys aren't committed beyond this season.

Or...you trade Backlund for very little now and still end up making the playoffs, or narrowly missing and picking in the teens.
Or things go really well and we're firmly in the playoffs and end up trading assets at the TDL for a player exactly like him.

How does that counter what he's saying?

Lars Eller, same age and draft class as Backlund got a second rounder despite putting up 23 pts last season. A season where Backlund had a career high in points. Backs is worth way more than a 2nd. All he needs to do is keep playing the way he has and stay healthy

Whatever happens this season, I struggle to envision the Flames parting with futures. If I have faith in anything, it’s that the new management regime values picks and the draft and believe that’s the way back to building a sustainable contender.
No more 2nds and 3rds for Jarnkrok, please. Not now.

Seems obvious to me.
Bunch of mercenary free agents indifferent to playing for Calgary?
Bunch of players committed to each other, the Flames org and Calgary?
Which is more likely to have success?
You really can find these people, they exist. They probably are not the current crop though.

It doesn't I'm just saying it seems to me they know internally they have guys who might not stay so they want to change their minds with system culture a winning.

Will he? What comparable would you use? 35 years old come next deadline and a soon to be UFA. Closest I could think of was the aforementioned Lars Eller and he returned a 2nd round pick three drafts away. Who would be the comparable that would return something more?

Is everyone just quoting and re-quoting the same article posted by a guy with 700 twitter followers or is there something new/official?
