To be fair, backlund has much more value to us than he does externally. And Nashville gave Johansen away for nothing, so hard to blame conny on this one, or Colorado for taking on a free asset instead of having to pay to get backlund. Ok having backs start the season, and move him during the season when hopefully his value will improve.

The Eric Staal that had 10 points and was -20 in 32 games with Buffali before being traded? Yep, totally the same as a player that just put up 56 in 82 and was 6th in Selke voting. Great comparison!

Willing to bet it sailed once they acquired Johansen at a much cheaper cost

if the Flames are still in the playoff hunt and can get a 2nd rounder or better for him then trade him.....otherwise just use him as own rental.
if out of playoffs take best trade offered.

Oh no, Flames definitely need to move the asset, they are not buyers.
A player like Backlund if he won't resign has to go.
They will get a 2nd etc at the trade deadline in my opinion

Maybe, my guess in contention for a wildcard.
However, they still need to move the assets.

Backs is not worth stressing about and trying to re sign, regardless if he wants to stay or not he should be traded. The guys best hockey is behind him.

Backlund is coming off if the best offensive season of his career. I don't see how that translates into his "best hockey [being] behind him." I expect him to trail off over time, but I bet he continues to perform at the same level for a couple more seasons. It's not like he is struggling to keep up with the game.

i agree but what if the only offers are a late pick? anyway, we'll see how things go once the season starts.

You actually don't know that. Last season was his best season as a pro. He could be better next season. No one knows.
Obviously he will eventually decline, but short-term, Backlund is a huge asset to a team that wants to win, whether that's Calgary or someone else.

Backlund will be a huge get at the deadline if he comes even close to what he did last season. Contenders will be salivating to strengthen their third line to Backlund's degree for a playoff run at $2mil or whatever the prorated cost will be then.
The problem with going into the season with this many contracts isn't that we can't get goof hauls at the deadline it was always going to be that going for it now will ultimately win out once we're in our annual battle for a wildcard/low playoff spot.

The tone from management and many fans will predictably change to "well.....I mean you simply can't sell off assets when we're battling for a playoff spot, what message does that send to the room?"
Fans will start referring to expiring UFA's as "think of it like he's our deadline pick up for a playoff run".

I think if the Flames are battling for the division then yes, they probably keep Backlund and he probably will sign a team friendly deal to stay, if the Flames look like contenders he will stick around. If the team is not in it though or even just battling for a wildcard I think you will see this regime willing to part with him for futures.

Just Backlund would be fine, but I fear it's going to be more than just him that is unsigned at the trade deadline, and we're not going to want to give up anyone if we're competitive.

although possible, i don't think it will get to that point - i believe they will have dealt with Lindholm, Hanifin, Kylington and even Zadorov well before the trade deadline which would leave Tanev and Backlund as the only wildcards.

Backlund reminds me of Danny Jansen with the Jays. He’s generally more valuable to his current team than anyone else. I do think that teams that are getting close to the playoffs will really start to see the value of a guy like Backs and his value will increase towards the deadline.
Saying that, if the Flames are a team that is playoff bound, he’s a guy that you absolutely need to keep for a run…even if you risk losing him as a free agent but I really do believe that if we show that we are heading towards a Stanley Cup run that he will be interested in sticking around for the rest of his career.

I didn't see if this was posted, but there are multiple tweets on Backlund doing an interview in Sweden, where he says he has chosen not to re-sign. At least we have a difinitive answer.
EDIT: It seems like it's an article from July 10th. With a possible error in transition. I'm not sure if it's meant as not re-signing for now, or leaning towards not re-signing.

Really awkward place to be in going into the season if true.
Potentially going into a season two key guys who have outwardly said they're not coming back cant be good for the locker room
