It's a weird time in the NHL, lots of average teams. They are already locked in to a bunch of guys...they would have been a good team with good goaltending last season. Take a massive swing...if it fails rebuild
Young guys in the bottom six, Wolf/Markstrom have good years, and trade Hanifin for a top six forward.
Seems like a good team to me
Every other team is full of holes too...who here called Vegas winning the cup last summer?

Not much can happen if your cap is locked in and can't be moved for many more years.

I think the point is they will be bad and not be able to do anything about it. That's kinda what I've been seeing.

NHL teams are behind other leagues in their cap handling. You have to be creative and that is one way to do it in the NHL.
In the NFL you can be more creative with cap hits, but teams like the Eagles come up with all kinds of wacky structures to take advantage of fact that the cap is growing so spending $2m in 2028 is much better than spending $2m in 2023.
You can't do this in the NHL - but look at the Jalen Hurts contract - https://overthecap.com/player/jalen-hurts/8793 - they are pushing money out so far because its easier to deal with in when the cap is 10%-20% higher then than it is now.
If you can lock up a good player for 4 productive years - 30-34 or whatever at the cost spending 2% of the cap in 2029 on a buyout - its a decent piece of business. Especially if guys reaching that age are undervalued because everyone is worried about the cap hit in 2029 when the guy is 36.

He'd be great on Colorado or Washington imo.

It would be a good strategy if you were a contender and needed to keep a specific player or maybe sign a specific player to push you over the top. The way the Flames are using this strategy it's more like we can maybe make playoffs for a few years then will deal with these contracts. It's not we can contend for a few years, hopefully win a cup, then deal with these contracts. And if you have 1 or 2 sure but not 3 or 4.

Except it is. Just because you don't want it to be doesn't make it so.

This team is a contender if you really want extend the number of teams that are contenders. Don’t think many would take the Flames next year over the Avs, Stars, Knights, Oilers or Kings in the West. Could make an argument against the Wild and Kraken. Wild card or 3rd in the pacific is probably the best case scenario.
Just because some people think this team is a legitimate Stanley Cup contender does not make it so.

Well we don't know what this team is yet. There are way too many unknowns still.

I guess, but if the Flames are in the Stanley Cup contender category then the capitals and jets are too. It is a pretty big category to get the Flames into it.
