We didn't know how good we had it when Tom was everyone's friend on MySpace.

Elon Musk accused of owing $500m in Twitter severance

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-66183954

A former human resources boss at Twitter has accused the company of failing to pay roughly $500m (£385m) in severance pay owed to former staff of the company.

It is the latest of multiple lawsuits filed against the company over the mass firings that followed Mr Musk's purchase of Twitter for $44bn (£34bn) last year.

It really speaks to how incompetent Musk is and how much of a db he is, when people are cheering, in a way, for a guy like Zuckerberg.

this is a cost-saving strategy. I'm not defending it, saying it's right or that companies should do it, but some orgs, like my former one, believe that you don't need to pay out comp and let the people sue you. That's first of all, if they sue you, second of all, if they can afford it / want to, third of all, by the time the dust clears you earn all that juicy NPV until you actually have to payout future dollars. And fourth of all, usually it's a settlement vs. full award which reduces what you owe. It's not that he doesn't believe it's owed or think he won't eventually owe it, he's just being a snakey cheapskate loser. I'm not sure what the solution is other than fast tracking severance cases but the courts in most jurisdictions are pretty backed up following covid.

You sure about that? I have my doubts. He's a petty little man, and he probably smiles every time he imagines a former Twitter employee struggling to get what is legally owed.

...and the cage has a lock. And then we just kind leave them and walk away(webcams on, of course). Maybe add some gerbil style water feeders for them.

Unless Zuck drags it out, that’d be a really short scrap.

Elon Musk's X Corp. is suing four unidentified data scrapers accused of "severely tax[ing]" Twitter's servers and degrading the social network's user experience. The defendants, known only by their IP addresses so far, allegedly "engaged in widespread unlawful scraping of data from Twitter" by "flooding Twitter's sign-up page with automated requests."

"The volume of these requests far exceeded what any single individual could send to a server in a given period and clearly indicated that these automated requests were aimed at scraping data from Twitter. These requests have severely taxed X Corp.'s servers and impaired the user experience for millions of X Corp.'s customers," the lawsuit alleged.

The lawsuit, which seeks damages of at least $1 million, was filed last week in Dallas County District Court and reported yesterday by the Dallas-based station WFAA. The defendants are four John Does. Twitter hopes to learn their true identities during discovery.

And I would have no problem with that.

Imagine watching Musk get knocked the #### out with a roudhouse. Money well spent, IMO.

Anecdotal but in Canada the courts typically award employees with what could be viewed as punitive damages if the employer doesn’t make a reasonable offer of severance. Legal proceedings is almost never cheaper than working out a reasonable settlement, though perhaps in the us it is different.

True but there is also mitigation of damages by employees finding a new job while waiting to sue

If you can sit around for a year and not work you will most likely win and get punative too

However if you have all you old buddies messaging you to join FB as an engineer and work on threads and you take the role you’ve mitigated your loses and that can be taken into account on severance owed

That’s why a lot of people just take a full release and lump sum so they can get a job immediately and not pay back severance / self mitigate

Twitter seeks end to U.S. oversight of data use as FTC's Lina Kahn goes before House committee

https://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/twit...ttee-1.6478235

Twitter wants a federal court to end an order imposed by the Federal Trade Commission that limits its data security practices.

The FTC has been watching the company for years since Twitter agreed to a 2011 consent order alleging serious data security lapses. But the agency's concerns spiked with the tumult that followed Elon Musk's Oct. 27 takeover of the company.

X Corp., now Twitter's corporate name, has filed a motion with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, for a protective order and relief from the consent order.
The order seeks a stay that would prevent the FTC from deposing Musk.

Just out of curiosity, what anecdotal experience are you basing this on?

Punitive damages being awarded is a rare occurrence in my experience, at least in Alberta anyways.

On Thursday Twitter announced that it would begin sharing ad revenue with content creators on its platform for the first time. But the offer won’t apply to all creators.

The first beneficiaries appear to be string of high profile far right influencers who tweeted before the announcement how much they’ve earned as part of the program. Ian Miles Cheong, Benny Johnson, and Ashley St. Claire all touted their earnings
Quote:
“Wow. Elon Musk wasn’t kidding. Content monetization is real,” tweeted an anonymous account called End Wokeness, with 1.4 million followers, accompanied by a screenshot showing earnings of over $10,400.

So far, the influencers who have publicly revealed that they’re part of the program are prominent figures on the right. Andrew Tate, for example, who was recently released from jail on rape and human trafficking charges, posted that he’d been paid over $20,000 by Twitter.
Quote:
Twitter claimed, in a blog post, that creators’ share of advertising revenue would be based on a calculation of replies to their posts and monthly impressions. The program is only available in countries where Stripe, a payment platform, supports payouts, and recipients must pay for Twitter Blue, the platform’s monthly subscription service, to be eligible.

Not all creators who want to monetize will be able to. Creators who apply to the program will have to pass “human review” and there is currently no open application for those interested in joining.
