Yeah, they went all in on offense. Over pay a little for Tanev, get another defensive dman, and then a whole bunch of defensive forward depth.

They aren't going to sign both to extensions so take your pick

I've got nothing to go on here but I feel like we are going to get some movement today!

Based on what Sec and Dis have been saying probably not the best guess but I feel like something is going to go down!

Clearly if you are talking about next season but the conversation was about building a team around a generational talent. The Oilers had two and squandered it. The other poster said they should have sold of Draisaitl for a quantity over quality type of trade rather than build around both. I disagreed because Draisaitl is the best bargain in the league and teams don't get better trading contracts like that.

I assumed Calgary would be looking for a first round pick.

Most of the rebuilding teams would be reluctant to give up what could be a pretty good pick.

Rebuilding teams generally have a solid top 5 of prospects. If you can’t give a high 2nd one of those for an established top 4 defenseman (assumed signed long-term), then you don’t get to have that player.

At some point you’ve got to start utilizing your prospect cupboard and draft capital, because not all prospects pan out the way you want them too. Yes, you’ll hit the home run here and there.

I think they could get better for next year and beyond trading him

I agree they make give up a 2nd round pick. Conroy would only accept that as the best of the draft capital as a last resort.

Why not? I have been told the cap is skyrocketing so 9 million is really quite cheap in 5 or 6 years. I am sure 15 million for each player will be equally manageable under the skyrocketing cap.

That expectation isn't because they won't be able to, it's because many feel that one or both of those players will want to bolt.

30M>9M

Drai also scores a billion points and is barely on for more goals for than against

Trading Draisaitl doesn't make sense because he is such a bargain. Highly unlikely you get 2 players for the same cap hit and they have more of an impact than him.

I know this is the common sentiment around here- but if you look historically, how many star players in their prime have left the team they are currently with? It’s fairly rare. The most recent of course is Johnny and Tkachuck. Now, if those 2 leaving Calgary are the inspiration for Conner and Leon to leave Edmonton then I’m all for it

You might actually get a balanced lineup

also, he has 2 years left but it's basically one unless you plan to walk him to UFA

Its as much to do with fitting both of them under the cap as them "wanting to leave"

Also, Drai turns 30 in October of year 1 of his new deal

Agreed, and don’t get me wrong, I want it to happen- but teams have decimated their roster to sign star players and keep them. Look at what Chicago did with Kane and Towes. I understand that was an actual winning franchise so the players had much more reason to stick around- I’m just skeptical that both will leave Edmonton..as much as I want to see it
