They absolutely do it on purpose. As others have mentioned it throws a flag to the base they covet, and they know that base will ignore any apologies in mainstream media. They have a total disregard for the pulse of this country and seemingly have zero interest in appealing to anything center/left.

It's a short-term strategy that's still relatively safe in Alberta (although recent results show that's changing), but is suicide federally. Which is astoundingly stupid considering the guy you have to beat is Justin Trudeau.

The alternative is that conservative parties are fine with bigots and that would not be good.

All this stuff is going on and people are expecting these people read and analyze everything at every event including basic clothing choices? It wasn't like this guy wearing a crazy costume or anything. If he wasn't in front of you, you would never think about his shirt from across the street in a packed venue like the Stampede.

It's just a shirt and a picture that happened in a split second. Like I said before, not an endorsement.

That's a lot of words to make excuses for them where there are none.

These leaders have a team. they're not roaming unattended.
If it was so easy to get distracted and take pictures with racists and homophobes, why isn't constantly happening to Notley, for one example?

I believe these pictures are sending the exact message that's intended by the leaders and their disavowing later is just standard lip service as a cover.

Politicians should be banned from the Stampede. Hate how they use this venue as a photo op and political opportunity. Sure it brings exposure but honestly I could live without the forced pancake flipping and sound bites. Look at the controversy (mild or not) around the visit of some of these figures. Let the people enjoy the show and the event without turning it into some political discourse. Yes, I’m the old man yelling from my front porch.

IMO UCB it's a dog whistle play. There's only 2 possibilities: team is incompetent (could be), or team is supportive of the message/ wants to give the message additional visibility.
Can't be sure it's not incompetence, but if it really were it is likely someone hits the bricks. Doesn't seem to be in play here.

At least they are getting the apology right these days as opposed to doubling down on it being a free speech thing.

I clicked on the person's profile and read a bunch of their other tweets (I don't recommend this). I'm now convinced that it is not satire. This person really, genuinely is that small and fearful and pathetic. A lot of their posts and retweets are straight-up incel rhetoric. As for "heterophobia", I assume they're just repeating a word they read another far-right extremist using.
