Sure Sutter could have answered it that way, but as you said, he usually made smart ass comments to questions like that, immediately after a game especially.

I was going to say exactly the same thing. First game and heavy on special teams. It wasn't a game that he could really be evaluated fairly on. Sutter was obviously expecting the question and prepared a snarky answer that came off in a bad way.
I don't think he meant to insult Pelletier, but it was also dumb to make the point the way he did. What he should have said was exactly what the situation was. Like it wasn't a great game to give him an opportunity to show what he can do due to how the game played out, but with what little time he had, he earned more opportunities. I think Sutter is a really good coach in a lot of important ways, but I wish he could have acted a little more normal when it came to things he would say to the media.

Yeah what an unfair questions asking how a player performed in his first game, after being scratched for no reason for long period of time.
I think the Pierre LeBrun and Katie Strang article a few months ago touched on everything, everything is being repeated and rehashed again.
Time to get back on topic about Backlund and his intentions of if he wants to sign or not.

That's incredibly dry and boring though. Would rather have Sutterisms.
The players trot out robotic cliche answers and people talk about how they want more personality in the game.

I think this trite and stereotypical. Jarome Iginla is widely regarded to have been one of this team's most iconic leaders, and he did just that: Iginla waffled for months about whether or not to seek a trade to another team.

Agreed.
In the moment I was stunned about the reports of how much players—not just Huberdeau—were upset by this. In retrospect, I think it's a situation in which Sutter had not yet earned the benefit of making the kind of public joke he had attempted to land. It seems clear now that at the time Huberdeau and other players did not trust what Sutter was doing, so for him then to make a joke like that I think many of them interpreted as disrespectful.
It seemed like such a little thing from the outside, but looking back on it I think I can understand just how badly it poisoned the room, and spun things out of control.

I find the whining about the players et al having thin skin is rich considering the simultaneous whinging about the media asking poor 64-year-old Darryl with over 700 games coaching experience "unfair" questions like what did you think of a player's first game. It's part of the job. If you can't be respectful, you won't be respected. Happened to Darryl in LA, it happened here and good riddance.

That's a stretch to compare any current player to Iginla, nor the 2013 and 2024 situations.

It's why you hear its so important about coaches developing relationships with players, so you can joke around with them, push their buttons etc.
Throwing a random comment like that through the media if you don't know the person you don't know what it means.
I thought it was a nothing comment, but the person receiving it may thing different who knows.
You don't show up to work and the next day crack a joke that can be taken a different way if the people don't know you.

He didn’t say it the second day on the job.
Weren’t you preaching about letting all the Sutter stuff go? I think most agree letting him go was the necessary decision.

Now you are special pleading: you are the one who made the claim that indecision was a sign of poor leadership. Either this is true across the board, or it is not.

Even if Huby was offended both Sutter and him should have mended fences and been done with it for the betterment of the team. The fact that they continued to display a dislike for one another after this comment shows un-professional conduct by both coach and player. Obviously egos took precedence over team unification.
Also, seems like Sutter has gone about doing his business after being fired and stayed quiet. Huberdeau has taken some shots (in the French media) and still seems to harbor some resentment. Switch your focus and get ready for next season.
The locker room seems disjointed and something isn't right and I think that extends beyond the Sutter effect. Who knows what the issues are but Conroy has a tough job ahead of him. Hopefully he knows the culprits and can remove some of the toxicity and focus on gaining respectability again.

Lol they asked a day after his firing it's the first and last time he has said anything about Sutter and it wasn't even negative.
You Huberdeau haters need new material hes been focused on his offseason.
