I just think if Markstrom stumbles out of the gate you can try Vladar or Wolf and surely some combination of the 3 of them can't be as bad as Markstrom was last year.

Huberdeau though is our most talented forward, there is nobody else that can do what he does. He's critical to any success this team has.

Why is OK even on this list? Guy didn't decline last year or have an off year he wasn't here. Why, we don't know. No reason to believe he wont be where he was before last season.

Huberdeau, easily, hands down. It's his team, highest paid player, highest profile player. If he's as lost as he was last year the team is missing any return from its biggest investment. You can't have a $10.5 million player as low impact as he was last season.

Have to go with Huberdeau. Historically bad decline last year combined with him just starting his eight year deal- he needs to get back on track. At least Markstrom you can move in a year.

Markstrom only because a goalie can have a bigger impact on a team then any other position

I said Kylington earlier, but after reading others weigh in, I also agree that a Markstrom bounce back is crucial.

Has to be the goaltenders. Too often the Flames would give up an early goal or a soft one after carrying the play and end up chasing games. Which I think lead to some second half scoring struggles as guys pressed too hard and wore out. Fix some of that and the committee of players who all had downish years likely bounce back enough to increase the team goal total by say 15 goals while getting the goals against down by 30. Do that and they're very much in line with where Vegas was for goal differential.

Not denying bad goaltending had a heavy hand last year, but when the Flames gave up a scoring chance they were typically pretty terrible.

I think that also snowballed a bit as the season wore on too. The Flames would get the first 8 shots of the game a couple good chances, clang a post, than proceed to give up a really bad chance against that would go in the net. Seemed like there were a lot of games in the January to March where they gave up 8 ultra high danger chances and 18 total shots against.

I think of the Nashville game where they gave up a breakaway and a clear 2 on one one timer as the first Two shots against...than Markstrom has a giveaway that ends up in the net. Felt like the Flames were trying to make this happen so hard that Markstrom finally said...enough I'll do it for you.

I think there was a bit of a feedback loop with Markstrom there. Bad defensive breakdowns, especially early in games, were a big part of the problem. He seemed to be really frustrated, which just added to it.

I have faith in his physical abilities as a goalie, but he really needs a mental reset.

I wonder if they over tried to suppress shots so much they ending up making massive blunders to start the game.

Spend the first 10 minutes warming up the other goalie with soft shots only to allow a massive breakdown that ends up in our net.

Goes back to quantity vs quality. If we are giving up a few more shots earlier and Markstrom can feel them puck hit him I don't think the coach will be upset giving up 30 shots against if the quality is low.

Remember when we tore up the shot clock in Tampa and Jon Cooper took a shot at our strategy saying he would gladly give up all those shots we took because they are fluff shots.

He did get better after his kid was born as well.
