I think Frederic would be an under-rated get if he was part of the return.

Young, big, fast and good skill who also fights and is extremely physical. He's kind of like Ferland, which is something this team has missed, a top 9 physical forward who can actually play regular minutes.

The Bruins top 9 depth and the signing of Lucic for the 4th line might squeeze Frederic out, especially since he needs a new contract.

I would think the penguins should be the most desperate of the teams that could be in on Hanifin or even Lindholm. They don’t have much in the way of assets but the flames could maybe use their desperation to get something big done.

What about something like this:

To Pittsburgh:

Hanifin + Lindholm (50% retained)

To Calgary:

Brayden Yager
2024 1st round pick (top 5 protected)
2024 2nd round pick
2025 1st round pick (top 10 protected)
Pierre Olivier-Joseph
Mikael Granlund (cap dump)

I assume at least one of Lindholm and Hanifin sign extensions with Pittsburgh. This is an all-in move for Pittsburgh. Dubas says he’s betting on Crosby/Malkin/Letang. This would be a move to prove it. It’s a big risk from Pittsburgh’s prospective of course because it completely depletes their already very thin prospect pool… but it could potentially return Pittsburgh into being a powerhouse again for their last few years of that core. I believe Dubas’s goal is to give this group every chance it has to win… Yager and any pick they make in the next two years does nothing to help with that. Lindholm and Hanifin do that right now. Also, this move by Dubas denies the opportunity for other teams in the eastern from improving by acquiring Lindholm or Hanifin.

I know it’s very rare for a team to trade a player so soon after being drafted (Yager)… but I’m sure it’s been done before. The flames load up with draft capital and a recent top 15 pick from this loaded draft. Not sure who wins this trade since both give up a lot… but that can usually be a sign that it’s a fair trade IMO.

I know he’s a bs artist, but just for speculation sake, Eklund says Buffalo and Calgary are discussing Markstrom.

I think the idea is to flip Hanifin elsewhere for assets to add to one of those guys as Nylander is where all the smoke is. Like I said, it's complicated. Not only do you have to find the right trade partners and assets but then you have to work out an extension with the player. If it gets done I expect it to be a lengthy process.

Who has underperformed in Buffalo that could be coming back? Has to be a cap dump.

i hope your wrong on this unless we know lindholm isnt signing. I just can’t see tying up the future with nylander and lindy and kadri and huby.

Now do i think huby lindy nylander could be a devastating line? Yes.
Especially with the talent coming up.

You know depending on what the deal looks like i might be warming to it. Looks great if the line produces or nylander finds chemistry with another center to distribute the wealth.

This must show they have a handle on lindys future here?

It won't be anything because Markstrom has a NMC and has said he wants to stay put.

Boring offseason for all the hoopla at the start.

Can't believe we're letting Elias Lindholm string along an entire franchise, especially after making those claims pre-draft that guys either sign this offseason or expect a trade.

Not only do we not back that up but now we are vacuuming up breadcrumbs and giving guys the same treatment as gaudreau, relying solely on good faith.

Don't have to just make a trade for the sake of it, but I wouldn't mind something like the Rangers did when they publicly announced their rebuild.

That is a pretty awful trade for the Flames. Yager is a third line prospect and a Joseph is young but nothing special.

also, there's no way Pittsburgh trades Yager immediately after drafting him. I know this happens in the NBA all the time, but I can't remember that happening in the NHL ever.

Too early to know what Yager is. I agree that I would rather the flames have received the 2023 first round pick itself so the flames could have picked someone else at 14th overall… but the flames may have made the same selection anyways. I think if this trade was done a month ago and it was 3 first round picks for Lindholm + Hanifin it would look better.

It’s Pittsburgh’s top young player (PO Joseph) and top prospect (Yager) plus 2 first round picks and a 2nd round pick. The offers for Hanifin and Lindholm have been rumoured to be underwhelming. I’m not sure if this is enough of a return but I think it might be a realistic return if Lindholm wants out and it commits the flames to a rebuild.

Lindholm and Markstrom packaged for a haul from Buffalo would be nice.

It is really rare, but Iginla was traded to Calgary in the same calendar year he was drafted (drafted in June 1995 and traded to Calgary in December 1995).

It happens in the NBA a lot because I think trades can't be announced until afterwards so teams pick the guy for the ream they are trading the pick too.

Would be cool to see in the NHL get some activity happening along with the removal of NTC and term limits.

Agreed it is extremely rare for it to happen right away. But I think it’s happened a few times in the following fall. I could see a trade like this as early as October/November.

I think the same happened with Regehr in the Theo Fleury trade?
