Scoring Winger

For me, It's Andrew Mangiapane. It is easy to pick Huberdeau or Lindholm or Kadri and point to them as bounce back candidates, but I think they all rebound back to their usual level of performance with a coach who uses them effectively. The guy that I worry about the most and see a possible anchor is Mangiapane. He's the guy that will make the 2nd line work and if he doesn't perform and regain his scoring touch the Flames have an expensive player that brings little to the table. We need Mangiapane putting pucks in the net and get between 25-30 goals at minimum. No scoring from the second line means the first is going to be checked into oblivion. Mangiapane is a lynch pin here.
Who is your "must bounce back" player.
|
Markstrom. There are lots to choose from but this team needs league average goaltending to do anything.

All I can get

Oliver Kylington, for obvious reasons.
Does he bounce back to 2021-22 form, or does he regress. A lot of change is about to happen on the blue line. Does he step up as a stalwart, or is he a bit player?

Markstrom was the worst goalie in the league for much of the season. Has to be him.

Such a long list of candidates but here is how I rank the top 5
5. Kadri/Lindholm. I don’t think either guy had a horrible year last year. Lindholm had plenty of assists last year but a few more goals would have been nice. Kadri got off to a great start but completely coasted down the stretch. If both are on the team next year they need to be a stronger 1-2 center group
4. Mangiapane. This team needs scoring depth and Mangiapane has shown his ability to put the puck in the net but last year fell off significantly under the weight of a new deal. In order to have a strong top 6 Mangiapane needs to bounce back
3. Markstrom. If Markstrom bounces back this team will almost certainly be at worst on the bubble and at best a top 5-7 team in the league. The presence of Wolf is the only reason he is number 3 and not 2 on my list. That might be overhyping Wolf but I do believe he is the real deal.
2.Kylington. With Hanifin on his way out this team really only has 2 top 4 Dmen signed beyond next year. Kylington coming in and building off his 21/22 campaign would be critical in the long term assuming the Flames can get him signed. This team doesn’t have a ton of near NHL ready D prospects in the system so Kylington becoming a long term piece is critical moving forward.
1. Huberdeau. It has to be Huby considering he is starting the first year of a massive 8 year extension that pays him like a franchise player. Getting back to being a top player is critical to this team wanting any kind of success over the next several years. You simply can’t have a cap hit like that perform like he did last year. Huberdeau did it even live up to his $5.9M cap hit from last year so a huge bounce back is necessary to justify the 10.5 he is now making.

One thing in his favour is he isn't coming back from a injury and it looks like he takes great care of his body.
I just hope he's worked on his ability to stay on his feet and stop tumbling all over the place.

Will Markstrom get the chance to rebound or is Wolf stealing his job?

Powerplay Quarterback

Rough call a lot of candidates.
Markstrom
Huby
Mangy
Oliver
Eat bread had a doughy shoulder so probably has the most excuse.
Marky had a baby but wasnt great long after or before going back to last year.
Huby well documented how bad he was but should bounce back and you pretty much need him to.
Oliver a year off but may anchor the defence.
Lindy kadri could be better?
Seems to be huby? The most dollars and term, first line player have to get more than fifty points.

Markstrom
Huberdeau
Success depends on those 2.
Nice if guys like Mangi rebound but they can’t change the fortune of this team

Markstrom for sure, since it's nearly impossible to compete based on his performance from last year and the prior playoffs.
However, if Wolf plays well, and they actually give him time, it could be moot.
If they head into the season with three goalies, this seems less promising.

Of course he will. As much as some people may want it they aren't handing Wolf the starting job out of camp. He's going to have to prove it by playing well when he is played.

Huberdeau has to have a strong year. He’s an elite player. A hot start is going to do a lot to quiet the critics.

The obvious answer is Markstrom, but I don't think that's necessary. What is necessary is that we get better goaltending. That is LIKELY to mean Markstrom, but if it turns out to come from Vladar or Wolf, that works just as well.
So for me, it's Huberdeau - he has the biggest gap to fill, between last season and his best. And he is the guy that can stir the drink offensively.
After that, Mangiapane. He wasn't terrible for most of the year (just the first part), but the puck needs to start going in again - we need his goals. Especially with Toffoli gone.
Then Lindholm.

By stealing his job I meant out playing him.
I'm sure Markstrom is going to get every chance to rebound but it also isn't just a Markstrom thing we need to be better at limiting chances especially when it's the first shot.

Who is your "must bounce back" player.
|
So, is your question "Who is the most important player that needs to bounce back?" , or is it "Who is the most important payer that needs to bounce back, excluding those players that you think automatically will bounce back"?
I don't think any player is guaranteed to bounce back.
But if Marky doesn't, the season is likely lost.
Mangiapane, whether he improves or, will not make a material difference to the team.

I believe in the Jays.

1: Markstrom

2: Huberdeau

3: Kylington
4: Kadri
We can't get league worst goaltending again and if Markstrom isn't fixed then putting "season savior" status on Dustin Wolf is a real dicey proposition so Markstrom has to be fixed.

I don't get why you would question if he's going to the get the chance to rebound then if you think he's going to get every chance to.
And even if Wolf does outplay him and steal the starting position Markstrom still could rebound even if it's not as good as he was two seasons ago. And that would be a really good thing.
