How is he not 45 years old already?

Its all that good, clean Slovenian living.
Must be.
Either that or its some sort of 'Picture of Dorian Gray' kind of deal, Kopitar only ages as Yugoslavia ages and seeing as thats not a thing anymore neither is him ever getting older.

Why should we pay more for less?

I don’t disagree. Kopitar is a play driver and a better player
Just saying Lindholm isn’t going for that or the Flames would have signed him already

Gretzky also took a fairly mediocre LA team to the finals.

McDavid to an Eastern team like the Rags suits me just fine.

Now this isn't my post but it was an interesting comparison I saw on twitter yesterday.
https://www.rawchili.com/2964342/
Not that Lindholm is worth the 8 x $10M that Kopitar got back then, but just shows that maybe 8x$8.75M as an example isn't the end of the world.

They are comparable players. That said, I think this was a hometown discount by a guy who wants his career to end with his one team.

They are not comparable lol
Kopitar led his team in scoring 16 of the last 17 years.
He drives their offense and won 2 cups
Only time Lindholm scored more than 64 pts was when BOTH his line mates scored more than him…. Yeah yeah he is a center and defensively responsible. That’s the only thing somewhat common
Lindholm wants more money and probably will get it because that is the market now but he is not and has never been as important as Kopitar to his team
GMs understanding this. That’s why Conroy is having problem dealing him for fair price. Tkachuk was gone in an instant because he was a real deal.

Producution stats say they are comparable as individual players. Kopitar led his team in scoring because they didn't score much as a team - he played with guys like Justin Williams and Dustin Brown - of course he beat them in scoring. You think Lindholm gets a lot worse stats on the same teams as Kopitar?

Kopitar is comparable to Toews and Bergeron in their primes.
Lindholm is just not in that league, although he is very good.
Those guys are HoFer's. Lindholm will get zero consideration for that.

When I say comparable - it doesn't mean "as good as". It means players who do similar things. Yes, Kopitar is a level up. But not a huge one.

Lindholm and Toews aren’t far off production-wise at similar ages.

Yup and cap percentage plays a role.
When Kopitar signed his $10M deal that was 14% of the cap.
Let's say the cap grows to $85M next year for the start of Lindholm's extension, 14% would be $11.9M.
So if Lindholm gets $8.9M that would technically be about 20% lower than the equivalent cap hit that Kopitar got on his extension and that seems more than fair to me.

Hard to take those numbers seriously when they have Lindholm at 35 points for defense.
Like, laugh out loud ridiculous.
Give him a proper score for defense, and his numbers are better than Kopitar's, across the board.

If you could have either player next year for a playoff run I'm taking Kopitar. If I could have either player historically at their best I'm definitely taking Kopitar. If I could have either player moving forward forward I'm taking Kopitar at 2 years 7 mill over Lindholm at 8 years 9 mill. Kopitar is a more dominant impactful player.

You aren’t getting Kopitar for 2 years at $7M, because you aren’t LA.

Your hypothetical is unrealistic then. You can’t even get Kopitar hypothetically at that price. He’d cost at least 1.5 M more anywhere else.
I’d rather have Mackinnon at $4M. Hypothetically of course.

The discussion was comparing Kopitar to Lindholm in case you missed that.
I said I'd rather have Kopitar over Lindholm right now if you could have either for the playoffs. Meaning he's a better player right now to me. Do you agree or disagree?
I said historically Kopitar is the better player. Do you agree or disagree?
I said moving forward Kopitar has the way better contract moving forward. Do you agree or disagree? Even if we add your random $1.5M I'd rather Kopitar.
In summary Kopitar is the far superior player because to me he's a dominant player that can lead a team while Lindholm is a support piece. Do you agree or disagree?
In summary again for you I wouldn't invest 8 years at 9 million dollars a year into a support piece. He's no Kopitar. He never has been and never will be.

Of course Kopitar has been a better player. But you can’t have him at the prices you were talking about, so why mention them. The more apt comparison is Lindholm age 8.5 versus Kopitar at 10 anyway. In fact, it’s more like Kopitar at 11 or 12 given the difference in cap percentage from now to then.
