Looks like the government is doubling down on their extortion law. Both Google and Meta abide by the new law, but the Liberal / NDP coalition, incensed that Google / Meta didn't select the option they expected are now using government advertising as a weapon. Why stop there, why not just ban both if we are going down the petty route? Canada can join freedom fighting countries like Russia and China to show dominance.
It's just funny how obvious it is that he's been carefully repackaged along very specific presentation lines... He's wearing the same thing in basically every appearance in the last week. "No glasses, blue blazer over a crewneck shirt, every single day all the time. No exceptions. We're doing everything we can to make you look like a real human person."
etc etc etc... it's so... contrived.
He's also deepened the tone of his voice pretty substantially, and is speaking much slower. Good coaching.

It’s tremendously funny watching it happen, and maybe this is just a perception thing once you’re used to someone wearing glasses, but why do they always look like they can’t see? Like, I assume he’s wearing contacts, but it’s like glasses people don’t know how to hold their face or something.
Anyway, nicer designer glasses, maybe a little more style on that mop. A beard, Pierre? Do you dare? And then I stan our little deep-voiced Conservative king.

The people who get their "news" through facebook or instagram are the exact same people I would prefer consumed less "news".
Yes agreed, people should definitely see less CBC.
...that's what you meant by that right? Considering it's news like CBC being no longer viewed?
I still haven't heard a valid argument on how any of this is any way beneficial to Canadians. The only argument being made is how 'some people' shouldn't get news anyways, while ignoring that this will only target real legitimate Canadian news from being viewed and found on FB / Insta / Google, likely further radicalizing 'some people'. I fail to see how that is a good thing, especially considering how our younger generation is more and more online only.

Putting whether or not there is a benefit to this aside for a second, come on fireball you’re not dumb enough to believe that there isn’t a lot of straight up bull#### being peddled as real on Facebook and other social media platforms and that it’s not causing problems.
Have lowered my social media consumption a lot recently, what is his plan to lower housing costs? Or is he just saying they need to be lowered with no solution as usual?

That's Firebot's point. Now instead of even having the option of seeing CBC news or other reputable sources - all you'll see now is anything but.

So the answer to the straight up bull#### being peddled, is by...removing real legitimate news that combat this phenomenon?
This law doesn't address the bull####, it's literally doing the opposite effect.

It's not an invalid point, but I think it allows the counter point much more easily. With this in place, the government (and other canadians) can confidently claim that the actual news in Canada isn't found on facebook or instagram, so if that's where you're consuming "news" you need to change you method.
It's the beginning of a "how do we address rampant fake news?" strategy. First, you deplatform. Since they couldn't deplatform the fake stuff, instead they are removing the real stuff from those platforms. Then you can make firm assertions that the platforms are spreading only disinformation. Will this change minds? Probably not those already entrenched, but IMO it is likely to save the next wave of easy marks from being led astray.

I don't think the best way to combat fake news is by making it more difficult to find the real stuff. I don't think the federal government does either. But this is the reality of the bill, and we're now jumping through hoops to create the narrative that it's actually a good thing.
My biggest disappointment is that the Liberal and NDP party are continuing to advertise with Meta. They should follow the lead of their elected officials.
It looks like the Bloc are the only Federal party to pull their advertising, as well as the Quebec provincial government being the only one on that level so far.

I don't think that's the reality of this bill. Any steps we can take to remove social media from news dispersion is positive. At least until there's a viable way of ensuring narratives on social media aren't controlled by foreign saboteurs. Frankly that starts with the companies themselves being actually interested in enforcing this. They aren't, or at least not interested enough.

Not defending the law here but in theory wouldn’t not having verified reputable news sources on social media platforms that allow misinformation to be posted help some of the people who are more susceptible to falling for misinformation to more easily make the distinction between the two?
