By riding their bike from one end to the other. There are a couple breaks in flora but not much.

It’s a lot of parks, broken up mostly by downtown (much of which has turned is is turning into a nice river walk area).
But I would say 90% of the river-adjacent areas in Calgary are geared toward recreation and general enjoyment of the public. I can’t imagine what is special about Edmonton.

I have been to Edmonton a few times and can't say I really noticed the river valley. I vaguely recall seeing it when driving over a bridge, but I wasn't like wowed or anything. I'm sure it's nice enough because nature or anything not covered in concrete is usually nice. It's probably the one part of Edmonton that isn't stamped with Edmonton yet.

I much prefer "We don't win as a team" which I think was a Woodcroft quote

You'll be begging for some of that sweet sweet NSR flow before the glacier melts in the parkway.

Literally hiked up to the bow glacier last fall.
It's a big glacier and while it's receded from where it was it's still substantial today. That monster isn't running out any time soon.
Beg? Never. I'll take well water over that runoff-contaminated meth juice.

This has my vote. Early favourite since it came straight from the horse puppet's mouth.

All the Sherwood Parkians that come back from visiting Calgary for sports or the zoo or whatever rave about how nice of a city it is. Anecdotal, but true.

Well yes, no doubt. Sherwood park is an even bigger ####hole than edmonton, just with less property tax and more rec centers. But it's legit in the down wind of multiple major refineries and two of Canada's largest chemical production sites, one of which produced agent orange at one time.
Edit: More bad things to say about Sherwood park, but it's legit just an overgrown trailer park. There's no natural features of note. No river. No natural lake. Not even a major train line! It's a giant labor camp built on flat land and then a metric f ton of lipstick to try and hide that it's a swamp with extremely troubling air quality.
You could not pay me to raise a family in Sherwood park. My wife is from sherwood park though lol.
St. Albert is mini Calgary, minus the mountains.

I really like Edmonton's river valley, but it isn't significantly better/different from Calgary's.
All of their eggs are basically in one basket. Terwiliger Park to the Gold Bar poop factory is more consistently immersive and pleasant, but there are still plenty of interruptions and urban detours required if you're on wheels and not on foot (and really you're only benefiting from the length when you're on wheels).
Edmonton doesn't really have anything to rival PIP...Hawrelak Park is probably just as nice as PIP, but far less accessible.
Their riverboat launch area is a little less nice than Fort Calgary-St Patrick's Island.
They don't really have an answer for Edworthy Park, but Mill Creek and Whitemud Creek and Mackenzie Ravine are probably a decent offset to everything from Edworthy-Bowness.
Terwilliger (nicer) is more/less equal to Nose Hill (bigger)
Nose Creek = east of Gold Bar poop factory
So the scales are roughly even listing the above, but I haven't included 2 important Calgary options: reservoir/Weaslehead and Fish Creek Park.
The reservoir path is better than Edmonton's best 15-20km stretch, just not quite as central. And then Edmonton simply doesn't have an answer to Fish Creek Park...aside from driving out to Elk Island National Park

You could take that all the way out to Bowness with no more interruptions than in Edmonton, and hopefully very soon Glenbow Ranch and then Cochrane.

This is fundamentally misunderstanding what the River Valley is though. It's not well manicured paths and pleasant park benches. It's mostly dirt paths through thick boreal forest. It's entire attraction is that you forget you're in Edmonton when you're in it.
Don't you see?! It's the ultimate admission that Edmontonians don't even like Edmonton. The thing they like about it most is the thing that allows them to believe they're not in Edmonton.

If anything, Edmonton could use way more manicured river interaction. This has long been a city building topic in Edmonton, one they've hilariously consistently failed to address due to NIMBYs, fears of indigenous burial sites, and ridiculous boondoggles like the funicular.

They evacuated my mom from Edson to Edmonton so I went up to see her (and delouse her) on Saturday and I can confirm Edmonton is still and always will be NO GOOD! River valley and all, condolences to mother nature for her loss.

Edmonton also literally stinks. Reeks like Sulphur/sewage.
I remember being at commonwealth in November 2021 and it would waft through the stadium every 20 minutes.
Imagine a city that just stinks all the time, everywhere.
