The movie is faithful to Indiana Jones in tone with many signature moments reminiscent of the earlier franchise, without being a cut for cut rehash.

IJ fans will find lots to like. Casuals who don't have a pre-established fandom of those 'Jonesisms' might not. That's my thought on it at least.

Fun movie for the fictitious archeology geek.

Also IJ was never a comedy. It was adventure with a sprinkling of dry humor here and there. I don't know why any one would go with the expectation to laugh throughout.

I'm absolutely floored modern Hollywood hasn't found a way to remake, rehash, or sequel-ize (and subsequently ruin) Back to the Future yet. Bob Gale must have incriminating photos of someone at Universal or something.

I haven’t seen it. I enjoyed Sliver’s review quite a bit though. But he didn’t say it should be a comedy. He said there wasn’t a single laugh the whole movie. Raiders and Last Crusade each had a few good laughs. Indy has always been pretty lighthearted. Zero laughs seems a bit odd. Then again it’s possible there were plenty of jokes but maybe Sliver and his ilk (fake lake people) are humourless so the jokes didn’t land.

Last Crusade was frequently hilarious.

Anyway I'll probably see it at home at some point. But acting like casting ludicrously attractive actress X in summer blockbuster Y to sell more tickets isn't a tried and true strategy seems like a weird take?

The tapestries was gold, I'll give you that.

As well as pretty much any time Indy is impersonating a nazi.

He's just pissed Indy is named after a dog.

There was definitely humour. Including some unintentional humour related to a plot development near the end that I can't give away. My friends and I had a blast with that, which included a couple of casual fans as well.

Interesting that someone would go to a movie that stars an 80 year old with a whip that they'd expect there to be an abundance of eye candy.

Jokes on Fast&Furious chad because the only skin they got to enjoy was shirtless, flabby grandfather Ford.

Take it in, #####ers!

Isn’t every Indiana Jones fan a casual fan? Like how does one advance to being a true hardcore IJ fan when there’s like… two and a half good adventure movies from 30 years ago, and that’s it.

Raiders is the greatest action/adventure movie ever made IMO, and the original trilogy was a huge part of my childhood growing up. I've probably watched those flicks about 50 times each over the decades. Indiana Jones is my all-time favorite movie character. I guess that makes me a hardcore fan.

Through repeated watches over decades, as well as a strong familiarity with franchise. That may include the Young indiana Jones series that had 2 seasons and 4 TV movies. So it's actually more than "just 2.5 movies". These are also classics that, like Star Wars, influenced the genre in many ways.

Basically how one becomes a fan of anything. I'm sure you're a geek for more obscure things that aren't nearly as expanded as IJ is.

A casual fan/viewer may have caught a couple of the movies when they were younger but never rewatched them or paid much attention.

The distinction seems pretty easy to grasp.

...what's the last (preferably successful) example of that?

Because I'm literally reading this coming out of a a movie theater with a bunch of summer blockbuster -type movies available, and having just seen trailers for all of them, I don't think any of them are going down that path. (Obviously the whole main cast in every movie is more or less hot.)

There was the new Indy, new F&F, new Transformers, and Flash. (Then a bunch of animations, some horror, some arthousey/indie movie stuff and what I guess is a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lawrence. (Who's name was more prominent on the trailer than the movie's title.))

BTW, the new Spiderverse movie was good as expected. I think I even liked it more than the first one, but more importantly it was different enough to not feel like a repetition. Could have been shorter though, some of the action scenes especially really drag on.

rewatched A.I. (2001) last night for the first time since it came out. I didn't really 'get it' when I saw it at 15 but wow was watching it last night a really cool experience. It's still a little meditative at times that might now work for everyone, but I was really into it.

Also watching it in a post The Fabelmans (2022) world is fascinating.

EDIT: talking about the perceived attractiveness of anyone in a modern blockbuster is funny to me because they're all largely sexless action figures.

Sliver’s review was a little weird.

But labeling people who don’t like the movie or the lead female actor as ‘incel types’? What am I missing there? I haven’t seen the movie.

And we're just poking fun.

Pretty familiar with his shtick at this point so it wasn't unexpected.

I'm just poking fun because you seem to be a bit over-invested in Sliver's negative review.

From what I can tell the distinction between a casual fan and serious fan is "watched the movies once" versus "watched the movies more than once". Like, have you watched the Young Indiana Jones series? If someone told me they were a serious core Indiana Jones fan, the bare minimum I'd expect is they'd watched the one short series and few TV movie based on the franchise and not just the main films. Maybe played some of the old video games or whatever.

The new Indy was pretty bad. If I had been watching it on TV I probably would have quit about one hour in. I considered walking out halfway though, but I had still some time I needed to kill so whatever, it helped pass the time. I didn't care about anything and was getting mildly bored at multiple points.

It's not terrible, but it's not very entertaining either. You will likely be more entertained by re-watching Raiders or Last Crusade. This just recycled everything with worse action scenes. It's pretty sloppy storytelling too, plenty of plot details that just directly contradict each other for no reason, the kind of stuff you end up with when there's been too many rewrites and reshoots during the making of the film.

Also, yeah, it would have helped if there had been even one funny thing in the movie.

People have been saying "at least it's better than Crystal Skull", but I'm not even sure of that. At least that was a mildly interesting mess. This was just the epitome of a movie that has no reason for existing other than money.

There's been quite a bit of backlash to her online, including some ugly comments.

I found Sliver's comments to be quite cringey particularly when paired with him advocating to be allowed to use the R-word.
