Which would likely be an even crappier product because the PBP style differs when you're calling for Radio vs TV

Are the radio guys back travelling with the team or has Rogers figured out they can save a lot of money by having them call games from a monitor?

Unless you are Jack Michaels, in which case it's exactlt the same.

The LA Kings have already done it. It won’t be much longer before organizations follow.

Last season the radio PBP team did not travel with the team at all. All road games were called from a boardroom. I feel like this will be a permanent solution.

Sports media is an absolutely savage business. Can't imagine there is a harder way to make a living.

I prefer the NHL Network, by a wide margin.

I know that the description of the play is different from TV to radio, but I'd much rather listen to Rick Ball and Kelly Hrudey than listen to Wills without a colour guy. Listening to him alone filling airtime between plays would be painful.

I wish you could watch games without commentary and play by play. Ball and Hrudey are good, but most are terrible and I end up watching on mute.

I just want the in-game experience, let me hear the skates cutting the ice, the puck getting slapped, the boards rattling from a hit, and all the swearing from players, coaches, refs and fans.

The way 960 is going, you may get this on the radio!

So, you can do that. You will need a decent 5.1 or higher channel home theater receiver. As long as it has independent digital audio. Dolby surround or dts. You can turn on your choice of surround mode, and mute the center channel.

That way it blocks out the commentary, but leaves in the crowd, ice and some music. I've been doing it for years.

It's quite in the realm of possibility as we already have AIs imitating celebrities and AI drawing digital art, which requires a crazy amount of image sampling. Like say if you asked AI to learn to draw ducks you'd have to first show it like millions of pictures of ducks for it to recognize what a duck is, what features they have etc.

So what you COULD do was to make an AI Doc Emrick, sample every single PBP call he made from the past two decades including any and all soundbites from EA NHL, feed it like every single decent-quality hockey broadcast in existence and see what happens afterwards when you give AI Doc a real broadcast to work with (bonus points for having AI Eddie Olzcyk, lol).

Basically what machine learning is in a nutshell.

CFL did that one year when there was some sort of strike going on with the broadcasters. It was great.

Just listening to Rob Kerr”s “It’s Just a Game” podcast, it’s always great when Peter Maher is on. He’s just as knowledgeable, sharp, and easy to listen to as he’s ever been.

Would love him to come back and do a few games, even as the color guy.

I am almost done already with BB. Its like 5 months in and they still cannot get the sound quality to work, all 3 seem to be on different levels and tones...and some of the commercials seem to be on yet another sound quality. I can't keep turning my radio up and down in the car. I download one or two shows a week but Rhett cannot work his equipment. It doesn't compare in sound quality to Bob McCowan's show, but at the end of it I never knew how awesome live radio broadcasting studios I started to listen to podcasts... it might work if they were all in one room but this zoom-quality where they step all over each other is painfull.

I imagine the Flames will take over production of the radio broadcasts themselves when the rights expire. Kind of like Edmonton where the Oilers Now radio show is basically Oiler's Entertainment and Stauffer is on the Oil payroll not CHED

Kipper & Bourne have absolutely nailed radio/podcast sound quality (when they're in their studios and not on the road). They can talk over each other and you can still make out what everyone is saying. Every other production out there sounds like Logitech mics from 1997.
