That 4th line should be in line for 12 mins a night as long as it’s not a plug that slots in.

12 minutes is a huge chasm of a stretch for 4th line minutes even if the entire game is played at even strength and goes into OT. Has there been a penalty free game in the NHL in the last 20 years?

We can go over the cap by 10% if they feel like someone is being traded.

I don’t think it would hurt for Coronato to get reps with the Wranglers at centre.

This team has very few options for top 6 centres in the future. I’d be playing Coronato and Zary 25 minutes a night in all situations in the AHL in the hopes that at least one of them can develop into a second line Centre (not even hoping for first line).

Wingers are pretty easy to acquire and the Flames have a ton of prospects on the wing who could switch to the RW (Pelletier, Petterson, Bell, Ciona, Honzek, Suniev).

Conroy said yesterday that while spots are open , he doesn’t want youngsters not playing. Can’t see any chance that zary or another good prospect makes the team as an extra forward or dman.

For a guy who is going to play on your fourth line on a capped strapped team, it's a lot.

Try fitting him in on the roster with the cap in mind, it's really difficult.

As of right now, with the players they have under contract and no Hanifin trade, the Flames HAVE to move (trade or bury) Vladar in order to get under the cap. That is with Coronato in the minors and having Bishop on the roster as the 12th forward. This is also with only one extra player, Gilbert on the roster as the 7th defenseman.

Every dollar of cap hit is going to matter for the Flames this year, if they can't move a modest salary out with nothing in return.

Zary did have an excellent camp last year, and one could argue that he was deserving of starting in the NHL last season. However, with him getting injured the season before and not getting enough games in, he started in the AHL.



This year, if Conroy is to be believed, then the best players at camp will make the team. I believe his exact words were: "If a young player ties a vet, then the young player will get the spot" wasn't it? Something like that?



Now, I don't for a second believe it is as black and white as this. There are two more caveats to worry about:


1) Salary cap - when figuring out the last spot or two, of course a 1.3 million salary may be tougher to work in than a 800k salary
2) Waivers. Flames are not going to mismanage assets and simply throw players on waivers just in case a waiver eligible player who is likely to be taken has a slightly worse camp than someone who doesn't have to be exposed


Either way, this team will be more fun to watch. It certainly feels like this team is entering the season with one foot in the rebuild side, and one foot in the win now side, but unquestionably this has been a tough market in which to move players anyway.

Pelts deserved to be in the lineup and was only put in because management and players stepped up. If it was based on merit he would have been in when called up.

Look like Sutter used Pelts to send a message to whoever it was he was sending it too.

Not a fair comparison. Especially when you consider when Phillips was sent down and the coach kept throwing shots at him for no reason.
