So free agent signings were never on the table - but dang do I hope this signals a change in philosophy.

When I heard Dave Nonis talk about attracting free agents at the press conference where Conroy got announced, I wanted to rage. Good teams don't build through big free agent signings. Internal development, trades, and minor (sub-$2M AAV) free agents from here on out exclusively, please.
I don't disagree.

But Vegas kind of built through Free agency as Pietrangelo and Stone were kind of UFA deals.

But I think it also shows if you're going to dive it should only be to sign elite players.

I certainly don't miss Treliving lighting all available cap space on fire on July 1st.

Nosek is still unsigned. Not going to move the needle, but is a hard competitor in the 4th line center spot.

We could do worse, and I think he could be had for league minimum at this point.

Vegas is in that NYR range of not being a relistic comparison point for how to build a team.

Supremely privileged in a way that other franchises are not, despite the thin veil of parity.

I'm glad that the team didn't sign any UFA today.
Just keep this roster and see how it work with new coaches.
Today other teams filled their holes, but they don't know yet what they need to become the real contender.
I guess they will shop the biggest addition when season starts, which it's our window to trade our guys.
Now, I hope Conroy and team find some young players with skills to fill AHL and add competition. I think Wrangler locating Calgary should attract some younger player who are seeking opportunity.

Along side the fresh start with a boatload of cap, high picks, and roster-and-a-half of NHL talent.

UFAs allow teams retooling to fill gaps and buy extra draft capital. The Flames are obviously going to lose a number of players to free agency in short order and they need some players to step in and backfill those positions. We needed two centers, a right wing, and a couple defensemen. They don't need to be world beaters, but we needed the bodies to backfill loses about to happen. We also could have used the extra picks from players we could sign then flip at the deadline.

We know we're going to lose Hanifin. Calgary should be looking to dump Backlund ASAP and reap the benefit of that good season he just had. Tanev is a guy that needs to be moved early one because he'll only get injured as the season wears on by his style of play. Lindholm is the biggest question mark and one that the Flames need a decision on now. These are all players we should have positioned ourselves to have replacements for, because we don't have anything in the system ready to step in. Even of you sign guys to a one-year deal to backfill positions while your prospects show they are capable of stepping in that is beneficial to the organization. Someone said that cap space is important and we would have lots of it when the above mentioned players are traded away, well what use is that cap space when there is nothing to use it on? I view this as an opportunity lost to retool, strengthen the system by adding additional possibilities to recoup picks, and not have a completely lost season where you're throwing the kids to the wolves. If Detroit doesn't make the playoffs they are going to be able to sell off the majority of those six free agents they signed for draft capital. The Flames should have positioned themselves to do the same.

I am looking at the Flames projected roster and thinking - with so many key players becoming UFA's in 2024 and having to play hard to earn their new contracts, we could all just sit back, relax and enjoy a great season of hockey. I'm ok actually with this.

And if we do this, we will have the worst rebuild in nhl history over the next 10 years
