Not at all, I'm happy they did nothing. I'm frustrated that such an aggressively subpar team actually needs to shed cap to even play with a full roster.

Also, regarding some Toronto chatter - I actually don’t think Treliving is super high on Hanifin. I remember him rumoured to have included Hanifin in a few trades that didn’t happen.

I go back to earlier in the Summer - Conroy specifically mentioned the desire for another top six winger.

So, Toffoli out and Sharangovich in leaves us in more or less the same spot...so it only makes sense for him to find a deal for Hanifin that either includes a top-6 forward coming back, or that frees up the space to sign one. There's not a lot of viable forwards in the free agent market if you're looking for production:

- Tarasenko
- Domi
- Tatar
- Bertuzzi

It also doesn't fit Friedman's reporting that Hanifin informed the Flames he has a desire to return to the USA.

...can't say I'd be overly into any of those guys, unless maybe we could get Tarasenko or Domi on one of these high value contracts that have gone (short term, reasonable money).

I am surprised Domi didn't get signed on Day 1. I figured he would be back with Chicago.

Sounds like Toronto is in on Domi.

I'm surprised Bertuzzi didn't get signed as well.

If Backlund is traded, I would go after Domi to fill the spot.

some level of speculation that Florida dumping Duclair is related to Bertuzzi.

So, if Bertuzzi is going to FLA, and if Domi is going to TOR, I think that basically leaves Tatar out of those four options because I don’t think Tarasenko would sign in Calgary.

Re: Hanifin

A source suggests the Bruins are interested, with prospect Fabian Lysell being dangled and blueliners Brandon Carlo and Derek Forbort mentioned as roster players.

Lysell is a Swede who has played two years in North America as a first-round pick in 2021. He had 14 goals and 37 points in 54 games with the Providence Bruins in the AHL last season. He led the Vancouver Giants in scoring the previous season — his only one in the WHL.

There’s upside, but not enough to make that a legitimate package. Carlo is the right age at 26, and of the Chris Tanev mould as a physical player and penalty kill specialist. Forbort has already had a brief spin in Calgary and it’s had to imagine a world in which he’s the preferred option there.

Sending Hanifin out to bring back Forbort would be hilarious

And a first I'm guessing would be too much to ask? I don't know enough about lysell but sounds like he would have more upside than Pickering.

It doesn’t?

That could pan out to be just Hanifin for Carlo if Lysell doesn’t make the leap to NHL regular. I’d want a more sure bet offensive producing prospect. And if you’re not getting a sure thing at least be one with a star level ceiling.

Lysell has good upside. Tremendous skater and had good production as an AHL rookie. Certainly a good piece for a possible deal.

Not a fan of this approach. You're getting mediocre roster players back in the short term that don't move the needle and actually make your team worse, and you're getting mediocre futures back thats have minimal impact for the future. Just chose a direction. Subtracting Hanifin and Toffoli for Carlo and Sherangovic doesn't improve the team. A b-level prospect and a 3rd rounder isn't a rebuild or a retool. Find it really tough to see how this strategy leads to the Flames becoming an elite team.

I was under the impression that Lysell was a really good prospect still.

Carlo signed from age 26-30 at $4.1 million per season is a pretty good deal as well. I would be a little surprised if the Flames aren't on his 10 team NMC though, being an American player who plays in the east.

I honestly don't think it would be a bad deal especially if the market isn't that great for Hanifin. I wouldn't mind waiting it out longer to see if the market improves, but I wouldn't be upset if that was the best deal available.
