The philosophy is likely that with Lindholm they can continue to push the "just get in" mantra. Without him, it makes it much more difficult so their preference is that he signs. The alternative means they have to play more mental gymnastics.

Probably the best player they can hope for, since Edwards is allergic to rebuilding.

It is sad, but it’s the kind of sadness that ownership has decided it wants to weave into the organization’s DNA so they can get revenue from a handful of home playoff games once every couple of years.

Who needs a deadline? Cripes, what an awkward off-season thus far.

“Wild”? “Sad”?

You read one chart in one tweet and suddenly decided Lindholm was only what that one chart said he was.

How sad is that?

How do you rush someone into a decision that they do not have to make for another 365 days?

The idea that there was ever any "deadline" set this early is pretty silly. How many 2024 UFAs were signed today? Usually, these contracts are hammered out over the course of several days or weeks in the summer, or even into the season. The absence of any updates is completely unsurprising.

Well, I can assure them of this:

They won't win with him, and they won't win without him. So pedestalizing him seems rather unnecessary.

At least without (shedding for assets) they can give themselves a chance at being more than that down the road.

Signing him for 8 years just makes for more pain when Lindy, Kadri and Huby are at the tail ends of their contracts.

That's the time when we want to be competing, not nursing a graveyard.

...what?

I've watched Lindholm here for half a decade. I've seen that he's a good player. I've also seen that he's not a franchise defining player.

The rebuild call will be foisted on them soon enough. I suspect early next year it will become apparent that Vegas, LA, Seattle and Edmonton are significantly better than the Flames. I suspect it will also be apparent with some of the signings by the Ducks, a heathy Drysdale and their pipeline of backend talent that the also rans are also passing the Flames.

Maybe.

But who is asking him to be that?

I would suggest they just need him to be a #1 C in the NHL, which he is by any measurable metric.

Right, and the numbers being bandied around on an extension are also not "franchise defining." This is just what top-line players cost.

I’m still confused about the Lindholm camp. Are the flames waiting on them to say if he wants to be in Calgary or is this strictly about money? Maybe both?

Keeping Lindholm should e top priority if the Flames want to miss the playoffs and draft around 16 again. Why change anything????

Lindholm is good. Not good enough to carry a team but good enough to not let then be a bottom dwelling team. The plan should be to keep him, hope everyone always has the best season ever, get the wildcard spot, and get that sweet 2 playoff game revenue. Then draft 18ish and do it all over.

Why break the cycle? It's comfortable in Mediocerland.

I disagree.

Last year sucked, but they still have a good team. I'd be surprised if they aren't competing for home ice in the playoffs next season.

Bottom 5 goaltending and poor coaching sunk them and even then they were in the wildcard race. I think fans are going to be pleased to see this group closer to it's potential.

It is since you already have kadri and huberdeau signed to huge deals. You'll have over 35% of your cap tied to these 3 players when the cap goes up by 10million. It's closer to 40% at the current cap.

That's your core forwards.

Personally, I'm not convinced that group is good enough, especially as they start hitting aging curves.

I’m optimistic with the new coaching staff that we might have a reasonable power play and won’t spend months trying things that outside fans think is odd (eg, Kadri and Hubby, or running with Markstrom who is clearly struggling).

Elite scoring from the defencemen kept them in it. Doubt that happens again this year. Career years from Backlund, Dube, Coleman and basically the entire 4th line. Not sure that will happen again.
