Kostin is the sweetener.
6 ft 3 215 lb Russian centre. Former 1st rounder of the Blues. 21 points in 57 GP last year.
I’d take that to buy out Yamamoto for less than league minimum for 2 years.

Even if they really wanted Kostin, this seems like Yzerman really scratched Holland's back here. Kostin was acquired for a C level former 3rd round AHL dman last year in Samorukov, he's an OK depth player but not exactly a prime asset worth a million cash and a million cap penalty. Maybe they see way more upside now then they did last fall somehow

Yep, it stinks that the Oilers were done a favor in a deal between two friends (or at least respected peers). But there aren't any rules against it.
I would not expect any favors from Treliving given the Toronto market. That would be career suicide.

Kostin is a 4th liner is he really worth taking a crappy contract and giving the other team cap relief?
The trade still stinks and its Yzerman doing Holland his mentor and buddy and favour.
The Oilers should be fined a 1st round pick in 2024 and the cap space.

Unfortunately there's enough plausible deniability that it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to prove.
He definitely should not be allowed to re-sign in Edmonton for peanuts though. That probably warrants an investigation.

McDavid probably promised him a signed picture of himself. And it said. "BEST OF LUCK BUDDY. WE WILL MISS YOU! YOU'RE WELCOME BY THE WAY!"

Yeah.. GM's really need to band together to stop this nonsense. These contracts were and are still getting out of hand. The structures of these deals are absolutely terrible.
Stop handing out long term, high dollar deals to players on the back end of their careers, which provide no beneficial value to an organization long term.

I don't understand this take at all. So what if a GM did another GM a favor, that's why they have future considerations. Even if the Oilers re-sign Yamamoto at league min we can't throw Stones because of what we did with Stone.

Wheeler had 55 points last season.
Not worth his cap hit, sure..but a buy out?
He will get signed, and if it's a one year deal it'll probably be a bargain.
