I wonder why Winnipeg didn't just eat half the salary this year and send him to Chicago.

It’s near the same amount spread out over two years. Gives them a little more flexibility this year.

They won't be competing for much with David Rittich as their goalie lol.

Especially given the soft trade market. I think you could talk Tre into a hockey trade based around these pieces. He did it last summer...

Only point in getting Nylander is if you're still all in and keeping Lindholm imo. Losing your #1 centre for a winger leaves a huge gap down the middle too. I'm all for chasing Nylander but Hanifin, Backlund and others should be the bait and only if Lindholm re-signs. Otherwise you have to get a centre back in a Lindholm deal

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
If Lindholm gets $9M, Nylander wants the Huberdeau or Marner deal. Thats way too much money. Huby at $10, Kadri at $7, Lindholm at $9, Weegar at $6.5. Then Nylander also at $10? Ooof.

Nylander is the same contract situation as Lindholm, but wants even more money. Brodie is pretty much valueless.
Bad deal on every level possible.
Get worse, older and more expensive.

They didn't want to give up further assets on the deal. Wheeler is quite bad.
Chicago will take cap for a price. Hall is actually a decent player on a good contract.

Yes, hence "assuming you can sign him," which we probably couldn't. But it's fun to think about as a hockey trade.

The big cap bump is supposed to be next summer taking us to 87.5. I think a 28 million dollar first line is fine if that is actually going to happen. I'd be OK with Nylander around 9, but I agree if he's asking for 10 that's way too much. As a rough blueprint something like this is in the ballpark under an 87.5 cap, I'm over by 500k and you need press box guys but maybe you go with a cheaper 3rd line or have an entry level guy save money in one of those slots. Kadri kind of blows up the model though, way too much for a 2C
28 1st
14 2nd
9 3rd
3 4th
26 for the blueline and 8 for your goalies

Maybe, though it seems clear that the market for our players is not as robust as we hoped.

Who's 1C on your line? Lindholm?

Yeah I didn't really analyze numbers deeply just saying if the cap goes up three first liners on 9-10 mil could work and Lindholm was the guy I was envisioning on that Nylander-Huberdeau line.
I don't think it makes any sense to target Nylander if Lindholm is leaving. Flames should be rebuilding/retooling, whatever you want to call it if he goes not chasing high end wingers unless there is some magical 1C trade out there to replace him.
