I am not a physics expert but the pressure on the outside of that porthole is the same as what is collapsing the hull so I don't see how it would blow out in that situation. Not knowing how it was built it's hard to know what the differential would have to be to blow the window out. I think we need to engage mythbusters on this.

I was thinking at the point of collapse there would be a massive internal pressure wave pushing outward on the porthole that would easily overwhelm the pressure on the other side. But just a guess. We need some models to experiment on. Anyone have a 3km deep water well in their yard?

I'm going to send my own sub down there. It will be a beer keg filled with concrete. I expect success reaching the general area of the wreck.

Being serious that was the problem false sense of security. No tests of any kind were done to see if there were structural integrity issues.
Stockton Rush was like the guy in his back yard building something but with way more money.

And the other problem, and you see this often with wealthy, powerful and influential people...they somehow always think they're the smartest guy in the room.
Whether its Business executives, whatever the case may be, there are people who think they are somehow ordained by God or some nonsense to be infallible.
Theres something like 3 other people who built Carbon Fiber hulled subs, and all of them used the things once and that was it. Because they knew you couldnt accurately test the structural integrity of the hull and every subsequent dive was a gamble.
James Cameron knew it, Richard Branson knew it, a couple other guys tried it and they knew it, but Rush in his infinite and unquestionable wisdom truly believed that he and he alone was playing the game with an unloaded revolver.
Because he's an idiot who bought his own BS. The most dangerous thing people can do is believe their own lies.
And I sincerely wouldnt have had much of a problem with that. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes....but he took other people with him. For money.
Money he scrimped on in the design of his Sub, and money, frankly, he has plenty of and doesnt need.
Thats the major reason I have no sympathy for him.
I have plenty of sympathy for the poor outrageously wealthy saps who down there with him. They made a pretty egregious error in judgement, but the punishment for that shouldnt be 'Death by Implosion.'

I think there are 2 kinds of people who build their wealth.
Those with intelligence and a high risk tolerance. Those aren't the people you mention.
Then there's those that happened to get some money to invest, lucked into the opportunity to invest super early, and lucked into hitting the right thing at the right time.
Those are often the "smartest person in the room" type.
The thing with the people who actually ARE the smartest people in the room, they won't announce it, they won't flaunt it, and because they know what they don't know, they don't think it either.
I often find the smartest people I know call themselves idiots and praise other very intelligent people.
To be perfectly clear, I also call myself and idiot, but I'm just self aware enough to know it. Hell I've been a Flames fan for 34 years, what further proof do you need?

I don't understand how self preservation, the innate fear of dying didn't snap him out of it. That's bizarre to me. Sure if you're 17 and doing something dangerously stupid I get it your brain is not fully developed yet. He was a mature adult, apparently.

While every one becomes an adult, not every one attains maturity.
Perks of the modern world allowed Rush to evade natural selection. Took him going 13,000 feet under the ocean in an RC barrel to get back in the game.
We're sheltering people this brazenly stupid everywhere now. Difference is they don't have the means to put themselves at the same risk with their daily activities.

Maybe this is over the top but training survival instinct out of our species may be the instrument of our demise.

It doesnt matter who said it. Just think of the concept.
If someone believes a thing to be absolutely true and correct that simply is not, thats going to run you into trouble.

This assumes the world is way more of a meritocracy than it is. I think familial wealth factors in more than the two you mentioned.
