"No Major Signings" UFA thread
I've been hearing Conroy bang the same drum over and over again over the last few weeks about having "no major signings" in the UFA period.
Cool. I'm on board with that. Give some spots for the kids to battle over.
However, he didn't say "no minor signings", so I'm wondering what type of player we would be looking for as a depth signing.
Here's the lineup based on the current established team players and a couple guys who are likely to have roster spots based on last year (lineup is just a guess):
Huberdeau-Lindholm-Sharangovich
Dube-Kadri-?
Mangiapane-Backlund-Coleman
?-Ruzicka-Duehr
Weegar-Andersson
Hanifin?-Tanev
Kylington-Zadorov
Extra: Gilbert
Markstrom/Vladar
Now, I know a lot is going to change between now and opening night, but as of now these are our roster players. I think that there's a high likelihood that one or both of Coronato and Pelletier will make the team, so you can likely fill out the question marks above with those names. Zary has an outside shot as well. Does Kevin Rooney get another chance to stick on the big club instead of being buried? Probably unlikely, but who knows.
Bear in mind, we lost Lewis who was an incredible penalty killer. To me, if they do anything it would be to acquire a depth checking forward who is an excellent penalty killer. Not sure who that would be. We also lost Lucic who was a fierce checker and face puncher. If Gilbert is the 7th guy, would he be enough of a deterrent without playing frequently?
If I had to guess, I would bet on a veteran, tough, defense-first, penalty killing center for the 4th line to push Ruzicka to the wing where he is better suited. I don't see that need being filled internally. Flames don't really have that much cap space because there will be a couple guys up with the team on ELC's that will eat up much of the cap space. I'd wager someone in the 1-1.5 million range.
Guys on the radar as possibilites:
-Lars Eller
-Tomas Nosek
-Derek Grant
-Noel Acciari
I guess I'd like to know what you think about the minor needs for the UFA period (which I expect to be extremely queit), and what to expect for the roster heading into training camp.
This can also double as a free-for-all UFA discussion thread.

Philips, Pelletier, Coronato are likely for those open spots.

Derek Grant is only good as a duck. It unlocks some otherwise hidden power he has

I think we go after our "own" UFAs, like Phillips and Stecher

LOL, I'm just trying to find some established cheap options. There's not a lot to choose from for that role.
For what it's worth, I really like both Nosek and Acciari. Tough competitors, play defense-first, and great teammates.

Korpisalo, Andersen, Hill.
How cool would it be to be able to go into the season with one of those three in tandem with Wolf? Andersen would be pretty expensive, but if we could move Markstrom out and get a 2nd for Vladar... Korpisalo/Wolf or Hill/Wolf would be some $$ saved.

Honest question, based on all the rumblings, does anyone think Phillips makes his way back to this team? I'm pretty sure it's a no, but I'd like to hear the arguments.

Some names that I would be interested in ONLY if they are available for good value
- Brian Dumoulin
- Joonas Donskoi
- Alex Kerfoot
- Connor Brown
- JT Compher
- Andreas Johnsson
- Paul Byron
- Miles Wood
- Nick Bonino
- Evan Rodrigues
As an aside, doesn't it seem like Gustav Nyquist is a free agent EVERY year?

The ONLY argument I can see is it was Conroy who scouted and advocated for the team to draft him. And they have a close relationship. So maybe he can convince MP of a real chance here.
Add to that the fact he's a local kid.
So I think the scenario is if he doesn't find an opportunity elsewhere, where he thinks he will get an actual chance or secure a 1 way deal, then he might as well be in Calgary where he will be at home whether on the farm or not.
And he could negotiate a healthy AHL salary to gives him financial security.
Not saying it's likely but those are the factors.

With what we've seen recently for wingers/forwards being given away for nothing, I think a lot of these guys are going to have to bite the bullet and take a paycut to keep playing.
I really like (in this order) Compher, Brown, Wood, and Bonino. If they're willing to come for 1.5 million I'd do it.

Again, seeing the market for wingers, it's hard enough for established guys let alone 'tweeners like him. I wonder if he tests the market and finds out that nobody really wants to take the risk on him. Perhaps Arizona scoops him up. We will see...

Indeed.
I know Poolparty just got double hip surgery but I would totally toss him a one or two year show me contract just for ####s and giggles in the hopes can turn it around.

There will probably be a lot of players not qualified - maybe more than usual as teams struggle with the cap. I can maybe see the Flames making a signing or two if someone interesting comes along.

I think Phillips can get a one way deal on a few teams, but his best chance at an actual roster spot is probably still with the Flames.
