The FA market is terrible. Who are they aiming to get? And it's very weird that at least one team hasn't ponied up the price considering they ultimately may be left holding the bag if they don't act. Very odd situation.

According to capfriendly he a NTC from this past season as well. Not sure the timing of when he has to submit his 8 teams. So he currently has a 8 team NTC in place and possibly on July 1st he has to submit a new list.
I don’t see this as a time sensitive issue.

July 1st also brings more cap flexibility in general which will help

Negotiation of extensions will bear the fruit. July 1 , whoever wants to be gone will be.

Neither do I.
To maximize value, they’ll want him to agree to a contract.
Regardless of the list, Hanifin has control over is destination.

Again though....every single team becomes way way less restricted to do a deal once Saturday hits. Every pending ufa dollar comes off their books that day which then allows flexibility for both signing other ufas AND acquiring players via trade.
No 1sts were offered or available this week....so Conroy and crew were smart and decided to play a longer game when way more teams could be involved.
I think circumstances have dictated this was really the only way to play things after seeing what the market was.
Not one deal was made yesterday as far as 1sts go. First time in16 years iirc. So why try and jumpstart that action when you wont get what you want?

No no, I think Conroy made the right decision here. What I am amazed of was teams not ponying up and paying what it takes when the UFA market is terrible. If you look at any one team in isolation you could understand them wanting to take advantage of a rookie GM, but when looked at collectively with game theory, you'd think one team wouldn't take the chance of needing that FA pickup and would rather just pay the price for a superior talent in Hanifin. But you answered my question - cap space becomes available July 1st. I really can't imagine the Flames not getting a killing for him considering there isn't much out there, he comes relatively cheap, and he's got a lot of serviceable years ahead.

I think those contracts have basically been paid since cap hits are pro rated. But there will be a temporary 10% offseason increase in the cap until the beginning of October which can help with trades. Problem obviously is you still need to be cap compliant at then end of the period so any money coming in that's over the cap has to be eventually moved out.

There been more (intentionally) leaking out of the GMs office in the past 6 days then the previous 6 years. Seems as if CC has a new friend in LeBrun, or could be Nonis.
Can't say I'm a fan of Conroy cuddling up the media and using them to get semi daily updates out there.

My two cents
GMs playing chicken little. And teams without cap space are getting heavily penalized by other teams, essentially giving players away for free. Trades are not getting done because teams are devaluing players with high or soon to be high cap hit, like the pieces the Flames are trying to move. So the value is simply underwhelming compared to earlier years.

Yeah this is how I'm also reading it, I mean other GMs know the situation and what they are offering. It seems kind of useless (desperate?) to throw this stuff at the media.

Not sure why you assume it’s Conroy and the Flames leaking to the media. The Athletic article makes it clear Hanifin’s agent (“a source close to the player”) is the one talking. It’s almost always agents who leak trade talks to the media.

This gets repeated a lot but I'd love to know the source for this conclusion. As front offices grow, there are more and more people who can drop info to the media. And some things that get reported seem like they could not come from the player agent organization.

Lebrun has had inside scoop on the Flames since the Treliving days this isn't anything new.
But don't let the that posters Conroy talks to the media a lot shtick change anything.
Lebrun even had the Hamilton trade almost a week prior with the names minus Fox.

Bit of info I just received is the Sabres offer for Noah Hanifin was Victor Olofsson and pick #86 in the 2023 draft. If that actually is the offer I am glad Conroy said no. Victor Olofsson can score but is 27 and one year from UFA.

Agents are party to most trade negotiations these days - and certainly any that might involve an extension. They have no loyalty to any particular team and have an interest in channeling info to the media. Sometimes they even take the lead in negotiating trades.
Quote:
The Penguins are on a short list of teams to which Hanifin would approve a trade, said a source close to the player, who was granted anonymity so they could speak freely…
Hanifin would be willing to sign an extension with the Penguins if acquired, the source close to the player told The Athletic.
|
That sure sounds like an agent to me.

Ooof - glad he passed on that as well. The howling on this board would have been insufferable.

Yeah but how would the agents know what is being offered? I'm sure they know what teams are in the mix but they should have no business knowing what is going the other way. Why would they even care?
