His agent has done the 2 year thing before with Gavrikov. They are banking on the increased salary cap when the contract is up to cash in.
The great thing about this is that it works for the flames too. If the flames suck, they can flip Shaggy, either next off-season or at next year's deadline as a rental. If the cap is increasing the return will be higher as there will be more teams with cap-space that can bid for the player.
FWIW, Shar was being shopped for a while by NJ, and many teams were interested.
He's a good trade target as a guy with upside and little risk.
Once I saw Taylor Hall being essentially given away, I wasn't sure why we should expect any more for Toffoli. Sure Hall had an additional year, but that looked like a plus to me, he's a good player.
I doubt there was anything better out there.

I think it likely changes people's feelings on the club. If you have found positives in the past 20 years you will not be nearly as close to the end of your rope as people who have seen felt it has been 20 years.
For this deal I actually feel the value is fine, just prefer that the Sharagonovich piece was a draft pick versus the player. I am concerned that it means we are trying to stay competitive which also gives me concern but not sure it is fair to judge the trade on that.
Then aren't you saying people are unable to evaluate a recent, singular transaction because they are jaded ... making the whole point that they are likely too negative actually a fact?

Isn't end of your rope by very definition someone that is so affected that they are irrational and/or unable to cope?
Was never, at any point, talking about anyone in particular.
No but I think most people here put me in the group we are talking about so I was just stating that someone with the views we are talking about is still able to look at individual transactions on their own.
I think there will be extremes on both side positive and negative that probably can't be those are the outliers and people that don't really want to have a reasoned discussion.

It's tough to evaluate single transactions in insolation if you think the entire strategy or trajectory the team is heading in is flawed. This trade is not hugely significant, but Tkachuk I think was really wasted, and I hope they don't waste Lindholm and Hanifin trying to "compete." Even if they make a good futures trade for Lindholm for example I think it's almost pointless if they continue trying to win now because you just throw a good player into an aging average team.

Here's Sharangovich's interview in Belarus post trade:
Thoughts about the trade
-----
He was expecting a trade right at the end of the season. He was discussing it with his agent, and was just waiting for it to happen.
Calgary as a destination became an option right before the draft.
Him and his agent thought it was a good place, and a good opportunity.
He wasn't sleeping during the trade despite the late hour(4am) because he was expecting a trade.
Signing with the Flames
-----
Really happy about the trade, and that he was able to sign a contract rather quickly.
Everything happened so quickly. The trade happened around 4am(local time), he got a call from his agent, who told him that's all that's left is to sign a contract.
The agent started discussions about the contract immediately, and it only took a day or two before it was done.
Sharangovich asked for a trade per his agent
-----
Around the end of the season was when he asked for a trade. He wanted another boost to his game.
A new team, and a new country will only benefit him because he needed a push to restart his career.
Last season wasn't great for him individually, despite the team doing well. So he wasn't happy with his play, and the results on the ice.
Optimistic about Calgary and the Retool
-----
He's going to Calgary only with positive vibes, and looks forward to the opportunity.
When the trade happened I talked to the GM. He told me I was a good hockey player, but that we must go in different directions. Said goodbye on a good note.
There were other tidbits there about his family, drafting players from Belarus, so if you guys want you can brush up on your Russian, or read the subtitles.

The other side is always extremist no matter which side you are on

He is aware that Belarus, while not a current Warzone is 'Warzone adjacent' right?
Because he has family there. He was also born there, so it's easier sometimes when you're surrounded by your language and culture. The war in Ukraine doesn't affect the daily life in Belarus whatsoever.
He goes there every year. In the interview he actually said he was there for a month now and he was glad he could stay longer. Last year he managed only 2 weeks. Also in his interview he said that (probably his) parents finally got to see his kid in person, so that's a good reason.
